The answer is usually yes to most burning and ripping software, though of course updates are just added to the original installation. Example: completely uninstall Nero 6 before installing Nero 7. This does not apply to ALL software however - messenger programmes for instance and antivirus do not normally require an uninstall when a new version is available.

the easiest way is to just unistall the old software, keep registration information if necessary and to just install the new version that way you never make mistakes...

You cannot make mistakes installing software except that you use up unecessary disc space if you don't need to keep the original programme. If there is a problem installing software there is virtually always a message telling you what is wrong and the solution required. Some programmes do not come with uninstall extensions anyway don't forget.
