I want to convert some of my wav files into mp3 format & I already have the program to do this. However, what is the best bitrate to make an mp3?

128kbits or 192kbits?

I heard these are the most common and most compatible with best sound quality. I will be burning these songs often and will use them on my ipod as well.

What are the benefits and disadvantages of each bitrate? What do you recommend? 128 or 192 and why?

Use a program called Exact Audio Copy to make high quality MP3's. follow this guide = http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/mydeneaclame.cfm

VBR MP3's are the way to go. They are better than CBR MP3's which stay the same bit rate at each frame of audio.

I already have a converting program. All I need is opinions on what is better, 128kbits or 192kbits and why?

I don't understand this bitrate stuff. Which one is better? I want to have all my music at the same bitrate.

There's 3 different types of MP3's that can be created:

1) VBR (Variable Bit Rate)
2) CBR (Constant Bit Rate)
3) ABR (Average Bit Rate)

ABR is the least common in my opinion.

CBR means each frame of audio is exactly the same e.g. 128, 192, 320

VBR means each frame of audio will be different depending on how much bit rate each frame requires.

VBR is the best as it saves on space while maintaing excellent quality

So basicaly use the 192k setting and encode using a VBR scheme to save space. The higher the bitrate the better the sound quality and the larger the file size, in any case.

for converting from wav audio to mp3 use the LAME encoder using the 192 VBR preset - best allrounder for quality and compression.

Lame encoder works with a couple of different programs
