I currently have an AMD-XP1500+ running at 1.3. I'm a casual gamer and my computer is used a lot for watching dvds and web-browsing. I was wondering which AMD should i go for and what's the best or recommended cpu model that suits both gaming and frequent web-browsing. Less then 300 is good enough for me to spend on a new processor.

Well if u update to 64 bit, u will need a new mobo, but if ur mobo supports up to 3200+ then thats cool but check your mobo manuel and post back.

I'll try to find the manual but i won't mind getting a new board. Can you tell me the difference between a 754-pin and a 939 pin package. I'm not that good at reading Comp stats, my board model is a gigabtye GA-7VT600-L.

754 pin is obsoulte now, so want to go with 939 or 940 pin, genrally the higher the pin the better

940 pins are Opteron servers, you DON'T want one of those. Socket 939 is the current standard, though in the first half of 2006, AMD is going to move to a new socket M6(??) that will switch to DDR2 memory. Check out anandtech.com for roadmap article if interested.

Anyway get a socket 939 board, and I'd recommend getting an Athlon64 cpu made with the new 90nm SOI (Silicon on Insulator) process as that is the newest manufacturing and runs cooler than previous chips.

If you want to try to overclock then get one of the new Opteron Socket 939 pin cpu's, folks have been having great luck overclocking them in excess of 3000MHz on air because AMD is using exceptional quality control because they're "server" chips.

The only downside is that the price of these chips has gone UP since their introduction because the demand is so great, the one listed on newegg was $60 cheaper a few weeks ago.

Here's link to newegg processor seach, for AMD, socket 939 and 90nm process. If link doesn't work, do it yourself. ;)
