I am a newbie to burning DVD-Rs on my PC. I have several concerts on DVD-RS and DVD+Rs and I want to be able to copy them onto DVD-Rs or DVD+Rs on my Compaq Presario 6000 PC. I am using Nero Recode 2 to encode with and it seems to have worked fine. I got the show saved to a folder on the hard drive. The problem I have is when I put a blank DVD-R or DVD+R disc in the DVD-R/RW drive, it reads it for about 25 seconds and then kicks it out. It doesn't give any error message about not being compatable. The drive works great for burning CDs with the Nero software. I have Nero 6 installed. I don't know to tell what type of blank DVD-Rs I'm supposed to use or if I need to install something to get it to work. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

If the size of file is acceptable for the disk, try using Nero express and locate your files saved to disk.I do know that if the file you are trying to burn is too large, it will eject the disk,no questions asked!

I tried using Nero Express but it still didn't work. My computer will kick the DVD-Rs out even before you try to burn anything, but I went ahead and tried it anyway. I was able to pull the files up that I wanted to burn and it came out to 3996 MB. That will fit on a 4.7 GB disc right? It just seems weird that it kicks the DVD-Rs out even if you don't have any programs open. The light flashes for about 15 or 20 seconds and then it kicks it out.

Tell me a little about your setup.Have you been using this burner in the past with no problems.Does it support the -r media? Any small details given would be helpful to help solve your problem.(Make sure the operating system shows your drive to exist.........)

I didn't know how to check to see if that drive did support DVD-R.
I found out today, and when I checked, it turns out that it does not.
It is only a cd burner. I'm sorry for not checking that out first before asking for help. So now I need to go pick me up a dvd burner and switch it out. Any suggestions on a decent dvd/cd burner for a resonable price?
I do have another question. I have a Sony RDR-VX515 Combination DVD/VCR recorder. I also have Samsung DVD-HD850 DVD Player.
Is there not a way that you can go out of the Samsung DVD Player, to the "in" on the Sony DVD recorder to copy DVD-Rs? It seems logical to me. When I tried it, I got sound but the picture was scrambled.
Thanks.

I do not know exactly what you are trying to back up to dvd,but sounds like you will need a program similar to DVD Decrypter. As far as a burner check out LITEON SOHW-1693S.AWESOME drive and runs around $60.You can burn on + or - format or Dual Layer. It comes packed with Nero OEM (6).RUREADIE to BURN....................

Thanks a lot rureadie,
I like to trade concerts with people all over the world and they are on DVD-R and DVD+R. They are any where from 1 to 2 hours long, and I just want to be able to burn them in either - or + format and not lose much quality. Does this kind of dubbing HAVE to be done on the computer with DVD Decrypter, Nero Recode, etc. or is it possible to do with my Sony RDR-VX515 Combination DVD/VCR recorder???
I am a master at dubbing and editing with VCRs but it doesn't look like that knowledge does you much good with digital. I guess I'm a dinosaur here.... Also, if you don't mind me asking, what is the plus for using dual layer DVDs?

dual layer dvds= no compression needed, MOST of the time exact 1:1 copies, no quality loss from original disc, while retaining all the menus, extras, commentaries, bonus features, etc ~ :)

reason i say "most" of the time it's a 1:1 copy is that i have seen SEVERAL original HUGE dvds that we greater than (bigger/larger than) what a dual layer dvd capacity can hold, while in this case, very minimal compression is required, the quality will have almost ZERO loss naked to the eye when viewing it~ :)

You will need to transfer your data from your DVD to your hard drive, using Nero. When burning image to DVD,timing is crucial.7,200rpm Hard Drive with a 8MB cache is recommended.A processor 600MHZ or Greater will be needed.Memory-256MB or greater is a must.Make sure all running programs on your system,Example Anti-virus,INSTANT Messanger need to be shut down.I found XP to be the most stable operating system for burning DVD format to disk.(Fire-wall turned off during the process).Windows 98se and Me can be used but I do not personaly care for them.Do Not Be Discouraged,Patience!!!You will learn.
