Hi all does anybody here have a way to overclock the Athlon XP 3200 and keep it stable the best stable clock speed ive managed so far is a measly 2.28 GHz @ 207MHz FSB x 11 Mult.

Any body got any better results ???

My mobo is an ASRock K7v88 with 1 gig Dual channel DDR400 cas 2.5 and im using the Aerocool GT1000 cooler

Studio Comp: AMD Athlon XP 3200+ OC ~ 2.35GHz runs at 40 celcius idle and 48 under stress (aerocool GT1000 really works!), Asrock K7VT4A , 1024MB Dual Channel DDR 400, MSI Nvidia FX5200 128MB OC ~ 600MHz mem 350MHz core,80GB SATA + 200GB SATA + 120GB IDE, 7.1 Channel Soundblaster Audigy 2 Platinum EX sound and midi interface. 19" Sony SDM-HS95 TFT monitor - sweeet
Comp2: AMD Sempron 2400+ OC ~ 2.0GHz (Stable), Asrock K7S41GX, 512MB DDR 333, Onboard Graphics, 40GB Maxtor IDE

set of monitors on the way soon :P

thats what i was afraid of...

oh well

just out of interest how come your using DDR 333 with your 400FSB processor surely youd be better off with some DDR 400

Is you CPU failing?, or your RAM? If you don't know, find out. Here's how, you LOWER the MULTI on the CPU, put it to six, or so, that way you can raise the FSB and see where your memory craps out. If it's your memory, then you've got two choices, either bump up the voltage on the memory a bit, and then see if that helps stabilize it, if so then find out how far. If the voltage bump doesn't stabilize the memory then either that's your limit or buy some new RAM.

If the memory can handle higher clock speeds, then that means that the cpu is crapping out on you. Again, bump up the voltage, this time on the cpu a little, watch your TEMPS, as a little more voltage should mean a little more temperature. If it means a LOT more temperature then that is a bad sign, you need to either get better cooling or call it quits. The higher voltage should mean a more stable cpu.

Here's a VERY detailed guide for DFI AMD motherboards, the techniques are the same.

http://www.dfi-street.com/forum/showthread.php?t=20823

If you search that forum you'll be able to find discussions on the maximum voltage that people consider safe for your cpu and RAM. The 130nm chips can handle more voltage than the newer 90nm cpus (bigger "wires" can hold more voltage).

Also a note on memory. If the problem IS your memory then changing the memory TIMINGS may help, the DFI guide is VERY detailed in this, I just leave my bios on AUTO for the memory, as I bought DDR600 DRAM and have had it up to 335MHz stable, so I don't have to play with all those settings. Also the DFI bios has very advanced features on memory detection for high performance memory so that makes it easy. You can also search that forum for your type of memory and set what settings folks are using.

My mobos socket A and the highest mem it takes is PC3200.

when you raise the FSB of the cpu clock does it raise the the mem clock aswell is this why my mem could be crapping out.

Yes, raising the FSB raises the memory speed. AMD Athlon cpu's overclock by the RAM/FSB speed. That's the reason you see people buy DDR500 and higher RAM for their AMD chips, as this makes it easier to OC. Again, lower the cpu multi and find out if the RAM is the OC problem or the cpu.

Im thinking it my ram crapping out on me as i didnt spend an awful lot of money on it. im going to try increasing the multiplier to 13.5 and lowering the FSB to 166 to give me the standard speed and then increase the FSB from there to see if i have any luck. theres a theoritical 2.7GHz using this setting but i very much doubt it will get that high because ive looked around on the net and the best speed ive seen for this CPU was 2.4GHz

Hey SypherTek do not give up. My system is a XP3200+ with only half the L2 (512) thru previous owner damage and this is what I've got it at.

2515Mhz with Ram at 2.5/4/4/11 11.5 X 219Fsb

The board is a Albatron KX18d-Pro 2 with Corsair matched ram.

The Vcore is 1.85 and the other volts are up on std. The secret is lowest possible Multi ie 11 or 11.5 with the above ram sets. They run better on Nforce boards with those looser timings. I'm water cooled with Thermaltake Big water and max temp is 45.

Don't be afraid to open it up 'cos the bios re-set will get used until you get it right. Use PC MArk 04 to run as a quick stability test to see if you are making improvements. Check also you don't have a dud chip by checking the AMD support forums.

3200+ happy at 2515mhz even with core damage on the awesome KX18d-Pro2. Water/Corsair and Antec!!!

like ive said my memory wasnt very expensive infact its just major brand generic crap so increasing the FSB just screws evrything up im gonna try that method i put in my last post when i get a chance.

i did actually try using an 11.5 multiplier but i couldnt keep it stable.

Im gonna keep trying anyway my aim is to get at least 2.5GHz out of it

Hope the memory works for you. I had value select corsair matched at 1gb and swapped to the better hella more expensive version and found not much of a jump. The biggest jump was in the timing, both from a stability and performance aspect.

There is heaps of data on the web with memtests etc to show the best way to have a go.. The board makes a big diference as well.

ive tried and failed once again at overclocking the 3200 i managed to get it up to 2.4GHz but i couldnt keep it stable so im just going to quit on it before i burn it lol

on the other hand ive been playing with my sempron system which has found dizzy new heights and is now running faster than the Athlon 3200.
Ive got a sempron 2400 running at 2400MHz :O and its perfectly stable at the moment as standard its only a 1600MHz processor (10 x 166) but i bumped it up to x12 multiplier and 200MHz FSB and its running sweet at only 46 degrees with the standard cooler. i havent tried putting it under stress yet but i will do and let you know how it goes

had to drop the back sempron down to 2GHz it buckles under stress :S at 2.4, 2.3, 2.2 and 2.1 it runs smoothly with no issues at all at 2GHz which is pretty good still concidering its only supposed to be a 1.6 processor

The XP 3200, was locked out during manufacturing, so you're gonna have a really tough time getting anything to OC it with. Specially without raising other areas such as the PCI bus which could fry your vid card.

Once they've been locked out, not really a good OC CPU. However, if you can get your hands on a mobile 3200....those are unlocked. They have to be for power saving features.
