Hi Ppl,

I know this post will annoy some of the experienced members of this forum but I have been hunting through the posts for over an hour now. and I just can't find a simple explaination.

Please could somebody tell me in plain english the basic process of playing backed up PS2 games.

My PS2 is Stock the old fat version, I want to go the swap disk method. what is a slide card? flip lid etc.

just the basics please.

Thanks :)

A flip top is probably the route you would want to go, but some people dont mind using those slide cards. With the slider card you have to push a pin the holds the disc tray shut, kinda of a bad method at least in my opinion. The flip top makes things alot simpler because you can simply swap the discs via an easy to access lid.

I agree with Pimpin.. fliptop is infinitely better than the slidecard tool method.. lots of people have trouble getting it to lock back into place and I think it maybe doesn't do your tray much good being pulled and pushed in all the time.. go with the fliptop.

Oh, and i'm not havign a go at you..but you could have saved yourself an hours searching through threads by just looking in tokijin's stickied thread at the top of the board. For future reference, the stickied threads hold a lot of useful info you might want/need to look at at some point.

good luck with your mod, remember to order the correct case for your model ps2.. and welcome to the forum ;)

I recently bought a flip top for my PS2 and also a copy of Swap Magic 3.6. I would like to know if it's possible and if so, how to correctly back up and burn my PS2 games using Nero 6.0. I'm using Memorex DVD+R's 16x.

Thanks

Firstly, I would suggest not using the memorex 16x.. get some taiyo yuden, ritek, verbatim or other good make at 8x max.

Check here for a lot of info about backing up ps2 games:- http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/252193

Basically though all you need software wise for most games is DVD Decrypter.. you use iso read mode to get an iso of your original disc onto the hard drive... then put in a blank DVD-R (recommend 8x media of good quality, check my sig for good makes) and use iso write mode at 4x.

Read through this forum, it's full of useful information and can save you a lot of trouble sometimes when it comes to your own backups as it gives you a better understanding of what's needed etc. this site also has a useful search function to sometimes quickly get the answers you are looking for.. good luck with your burns, and welcome to the forum ;)

Paddy, Do you know where I can ket a copy of DVD Decrypter? Perhaps Kazaa? I noticed it's no longer available for download here. They suggest trying ImgBurn as an alternative. Has anyone had any luck copying a PS2 game with it to your knowledge? I couldn't find any forums on it.
Thanks!!

@3dluis - Also, I'm not having a go here, but couldn't you just post that guide into tokijin's thread?... then if you need to let people know about it you could just post a url linking to that thread with the guide in it... it would save a lot of space on threads, but it's up to you ;)

Good on ya for taking the time to do it in the first place.. there are other guides on here for people to look at for DVD Decrypter etc, but half the time they can't be bothered to search for them.

Yes, I can use the edit button if I wish to, but didn't want to... LOL.

I wasn't saying that you had to write it each time... was just saying that it'd be more convenient to just post a link instead of your guide in every thread ;b

Buy Either:

Swap Magic - Cheaper and no Warrenty void. Does need tools in cunjunction to this.

Mod Chip-Upgrade so it can play all backups no swap, just insert and play, bit expensive though

As 3dluis said, but with the exception that if you do swap for a fliptop it WILL void your warranty if you still have one as you have tobreak the label on the ps2 cover to swap the lids over... but as you have the chunky I'd guess that your warranty ran out ages ago so shouldn't matter now.

check out the link in my signature about swap magic.. it tells you what mods you can get with what version console.. then if you decide to go with a certain mod you can just do a google search for that mod or ask on here for recommendations for places to get the mod from..don't forget to include where you are at though, cos if not you'll get recommendations for places all over the world.

good luck with it

3DLuis/Paddy,

I backed up the ISO using DVD Decrypter and burned the image to a disc but my PS2 still would not recognize it as a valid disc. I ran Swap Magic then swapped the discs out but it still would not boot. I guess I need to re-build the ISO as the next step? One thing I noticed that seemed out of the ordinary according to the instructions was the presence of two image files, a dvdimage.iso and a dvdimage.mds. Decrypter would only allow one to be opened and burnt to disc. I chose the image file but still had no success. The game is Metal Gear Solid 3.

Thanks

What media are you using madmes? I hope you aren't using those memorex 16x, as I said before.. it's better to use good quality 8x DVD-R like verbatim, taiyo yuden etc. MGS3 doesn't need a rebuild to work with swap magic 3.6.. just a straight read and burn... and choose 4x as your burning speed :)

I tried last night with a DVD+R but I bought some DVD-R's today and will try it again with them. Hopefully I'll get it worked out. What's the deal with the dvdimage.mds file? Should I completely ignore it and just burn the ISO?

When burning with DVD Decrypter you select the mds file as your source file, it just tells decrypter how to burn the image is all.
Good luck with it.. hope it's good brand media

Ok, no worries... I noticed we had a very similar links thing too, LOL... Technically though as I've been here longer it'd be you who'd be copying, LOL... just kidding. All I did was put my links in bold and added the ones that I usually have on my favourites list on the browser.. noticed there's a lot of questions on here about these kinds of topics lately..saves a lot of hassle just having them in your sig and saying "look in my sig man!!!" LOL.

Keep up the good work 3dluis, between a few of us we pretty much keep the newbs informed on this forum. Did you add your guides to Tokijin's thread? if not maybe you should or start your own thread and include all your guides.. then just point people to your guides thread.. only a suggestion though :)

later dude

3Dluis, Paddy,

I'll try it both ways if one doesn't work. Currently I have four new coasters. I picked up some TDK 8x DVD-R's last night at Circuit City, they didn't have Verbatim or the other brands you mentioned. Hopefully they'll work out ok. Has anyone had problems with that brand? I think Wal Mart still stocks Verbatim, perhaps I should save myself some trouble and go pick up a pack. Does anyone have a list compiled of games that require the ISO to be rebuilt? I guess I should stay away from those until I get the others downpat.

Sorry for all the questions guys, Mad

No worries 3dluis.. just a misunderstanding I think on my part.

@madmes - As 3dluis said, those tdk should be ok for backing up games and that gnies epert tool is supposed to be quite good, I have it but haven't used it myself as I prefer to do my rebuilds another way... however, metal gear solid 3 shouldn't need to be rebuilt as I did a straight 1:1 copy using DVD Decrypter to get the iso to hard drive, and then I always use nero's image burning program to write the iso to disc at 4x on 8x media... never failed me unless it needed rebuild to work with swap magic.

good luck and let us know how you got on
