So I've got my burner hooked up as Secondary Master, and the hard drive i'm burning from as Primary Master. DMA is on for both. Had the burner for a while, had problems burning at very slow speeds when I first got it, upgraded firmware to A105, worked perfectly at 8X.

Now, I just bought a spindle of 16X DVD-R discs (SmartBuy brand with some AAA quality certification logo (GO MARKETING!)). Burner caaks out with different error messages in Nero. First time it was a laser focus error. Second time it was a different error. Here's a snippet from the history file right where it screws up.

I am using Nero version 6.6.0.13.

Is it the drive, Nero, the media...? I can still burn at 8X just fine...Nero recognizes it as 16X media...and I paid a bit of a premium for the media, I'd like to be able to utilize it. :(

Any thoughts? Anyone?

(Mods, if this is in the wrong forum, I do apologize, please move to the appropriate forum)

I would say it is the media!!!! Since it failed about 40 seconds into the burn. I am not familiar with the SmartBuy brand, but most of the experts here recommend Taiyo Yuden , Verbatium, MAXELL made in Japan, and a few others.

Good luck,

Rich

IMHO trying to burn at 16x can be part of the problem as well. I have the same burner but can say that I have never burned successfully faster than 6x. Not that you couldn't.

Couple of things that I see
Quote:
TA-Status 0x02 (0x01, SCSI_TASTATUS_CHKCOND)
Sense Key: 0x04 (KEY_HARDWARE_ERROR)
and
Quote:
9:11:11 AM #23 CDR -1061 File Writer.cpp, Line 311
Internal target failure
There appears to be a hardware configuration error and a target error.

You say that you can burn at 8x without a problem? It's probably the media causing the issues.

Yeah, I saw that error. What might it be related to? System properties has no errors. I wonder if the ASPI drivers are outdated. I noticed that from some error logs others had posted; radically different ASPI types and versions. Do I need a newer ASPI version?

And...I just managed to burn a disc at 16X successfully. It was the fourth disc in the spindle...go figure. Now how do I get Nero CD-DVD Speed to do a Disc Quality Test on the burn to check the quality?

Here's the info from DVD Identifier

That sounds more and more like a meda issue, but it wouldn't hurt to upgrade your ASPI drivers just to be on the safe side, if needed.

Good luck,

Hi there,

I still suggest people not to burn above 4x.

Are you really in a hurry, to burn at 16x, save 4 minutes and maybe get a coaster ? :)

I burn at 2x and sometimes at 4x on Taiyo Yuden and I get 100% results !

My 2 cents...

Yeah, saw that thread. If the technology I buy supports something, I utilize the technology. If a 16X burn is good enough for me to slap in a DVD player and not be able to tell the difference between it and a purchase, that's good enough. It's not like I'm paying for the movies. As for coasters, well, try something new like 16X media and it'll take a bit to figure out how to avoid the coasters. I've never had a huge amount of coasters related to anything but media. I'm very discretionary when it comes to hardware for my computer.

Googling Prodisc reveals they're in the top 3 producers of media. Taking a look at some of the mentions of Prodisc in these forums tells me there's some division about Prodisc, since they're the manufacturer of a huge number of brands. They've received many third party accolades for their high quality media.

But regardless, I'm not arguing. Thanks guys for all your help. :) Where's the best place to find up to date ASPI drivers?
