P2P Downloads Drop Network Speeds

I have Earthlink cable and am connecting wirelessly to a Linksys router. Normal connectivity gives me around 3-3.5mb/s speed. As soon as I start downloading or using utorrent, speed usually drops as low as 500k/s. The torrent download speed usually stays pretty good, 50k/s, sometimes even 100k/s, but speed still comes up very very low. This happens no matter how fast the torrent speeds are. Even around 1k/s decreases my connection speed and browsing becomes like 28.8 dialup! What's going on?

I don't know, but the same thing happens to me. I'm using utorrent 1.3.

This happens with Azureus and BitComet too. I've been told its my cable modem, and I am looking into that.
