newb question about SATA hard drives

hey guys...I know very little about the different interfaces for HD's, but I want to get a new hard drive for my desktop and I figure that it should be SATA, as that seems to be what everything is moving toward.
The problem is that my mobo does not support SATA (at least I don't think it does). I realize that this means I will need to get a SATA card. But that's where I run into some questions.
The main one is this: if I want to keep my old 80gb IDE drive hooked up alongside a new SATA drive, does the SATA card I purchase need to specifically support both? Is that necessary, or would the IDE drive stay connected to mobo and SATA to the card?
Any help would be much appreciated.

hd stays on the motherboard & sata goes to the card. what is the make & model# of your computer or motherboard?

do you have any advice for picking out a SATA card? i don't know what the differences between them are or what to look for.
I'm planning on having one of my old WD800JB's connected and replacing one with a 250gb SATA drive.

checked the specs on your link & appears to be no onboard sata connectors. check the promise controller cards & also need power adapter cable if your psu does not have to supply power to the sata drive from the psu.

thanks...how do I know if my power supply will be able to supply power to the SATA drive?
also, do you think it would be a better idea to just upgrade my mobo, instead of buying a SATA card?

great...i'll check out those links.
and, yeah, i've found several mobos on newegg that support my CPU and have SATA. If it's ok with you, I might run a couple of them by you before I buy.

go with the ist board as fsb is same as yours & can handle 4gig of ram. might have a problem with xp so go into safemode to uninstall all old board drivers so than windows can load new drivers. this works sometimes but maybe not all the time so safe your info before changing motherboard.

ok ddp, i've now acquired the new mobo and hard drive and I'm getting ready to install them. however, i was wondering if you would mind giving me more detailed instructions as to how i should proceed.
for instance, what do you mean by saving my info before i try installing the new mobo? what info do i need to save and how?
also, what configuration would you suggest with my new board and hard drives? I'll now have 2 80gb WD's and a 250gb (SATA) Seagate. Should I try to set up a RAID configuration or what?
