Hey.

This is a query directed at a Moderator/Staff Member regarding the wonderful new profile application.

Judging by the rather interesting picture posted by dRD (:P) in his profile, I just wondered if the rules are loosened/different over there.

Peace;

Mods and Admins have profiles. Where can you view them?

If you go to My Account and then you will see "NEW! Create your own profile page [beta]" click it then you should see this

click profile and you are shown a list of the folks that have made a profile.

Edit: Since it's still Beta i would think a button to block potentially offensive material would be added along the way.

aye aye man

Cheers p4_tt,
I must say it's a pretty cool addition to the site.

Consider the feature to be in early beta. Our general rules (link at the bottom of each page saying "Rules, restrictions and privacy policy.") and currently, our forum rules, apply to these pages.

I suggest to consider the whole thing as a sneak preview, it might have bugs, nags and the URLs might change during the next week or two while we polish the system ready for "public launch". We have about gazillion ideas in store for this feature, but if you have suggestions, comments, etc, feel free to post them.

Reson why it was created? People were complaining the lack of "profile" data for users, what phpBB and vBulletin have.. Well, we sorta wanted to extend that slightly and allow users to have their "own home" at aD.

So will we be adding a "profiles" tab to the top of the page to make them easier to access?

That's a good idea. A profile tab to view other profiles.

The only real problem with adding a new tab is that there's no space there :-)

But we'll add tons of links to profile pages once we get them out of "public beta" phase. There are still plenty of minor tweaks that have to be done before the profile pages are ready to be launched "properly".

The list which contains other users profiles has gone. Is this just a temporary drawback as it's still in beta or is there another way to view other peoples profiles?

weazel200: There will be a page with alphabetical listing of users. It just wasn't very appealing as a front page for the new site, so it will be a separate page, hopefully available sometime tomorrow or so.

Thanks dRD. Also I hear it's a risk to post a pic of yourself on your profile page as the RIAA could trace you somehow. Any truth to this?

LMAO, gotta love conspiracy theories :-) What the heck would a picture of you do for RIAA? If you've done something provenly illegal, they can contact your ISP, tell them your IP address and time of the day when the illegal activity happened and ISP will tell who was using that IP at that time. They don't need your picture, Net is not anonymous :-) Using our site is, AFAIK, legal. And most Western countries provide freedom of speech, which overrides most other laws, so talking about anything is pretty much allowed everywhere.

And to calm you even further, we are a Finnish company and Finland has one of the strictest privacy legislations in world, so forcing us to hand out any identifiable data of any our users is virtually impossible and would need at least court order. Our cops don't generally have right to wiretap, etc.

What about all the dead space after the "About Us" tab? Not trying to be a pain or anything, but that's the only reason I suggested it.

Edit, nevermind.... I forgot that sometimes firefox loads the page differently occassionally. Sometimes there's a ton of room to the right and sometimes none......

Ye, there's some space left there, but not much. We'll evaluate it, but I think that if we add tight integration between forums and profiles, the need for new tab is rather minimal. But trust me, that's least of our pains now, still got about 20 issues to be finished before "announcement" phase and about 60-70 things before "v1.0". And that's just the beginning. Obviously the future development depends on whether the pages ever get popular enough to warrant the additional development or not, but IMO, its a nice way to add more "user-friendliness" and "community feeling" to the site.

As you might have noticed, we've added links to profile pages on forums already (people's nicks..). Profile pages are still considered to be in "early beta", but the changes left to be done before "proper launch" are mostly to do with backend of things, so major visible changes wont hppen in next few weeks.

It's all good, dRD :-) The links idea works well because once people really latch on to the profile section (i.e. after the 'official launch'), it will be a lot of bother sifting through hundreds of thousands of profiles!

Just noticed today peoples usernames are highlited in blue. This is definately easier to look at peoples profiles than going through a list.

Should everyone upload pictures used in sigs to profile page? Or will it cause too much load to servers?

About the profile pages, just a little thing. When you edit anything in your profile and come to finalize ur post, two buttons "cancel" and "save". Can u switch the order, i have clicked on cancel many times by accident. i dont know if dRD is left-handed so that may be why.

There has to be a limit how much data you can upload. Otherwise there will be problems...

Yesterday the user "doggy_bot" started a thread in the safety valve called "are you a vampire or a werewolf" or something along those lines. One of the Finnish mods "Jannejt" told doggy to stop spamming and creating useless threads. The last post I read out of that thread was doggy saying how am I spamming? When I looked this morning I see the same thing as you have. It's like the thread is still there but can't be clicked on by anyone. The mods probably are still deciding whether to keep the thread open or not. Also on doggy_bot's profile page he says he's taking a weeks break from AfterDawn.
