i have just tried to join 2 avi files together using virtualdub 1.6.11,but im getting an error message which says"cannot append segments the audio streams have different sampling rates(15814.00000vs15664.00000)" how do i correct this any help would be apprecited tia

Try Power Video Converter or Advanced X Video Converter.

Strange, they always work for me. Maybe you can try e.g. Winavi or ImToo Mpeg Encoder which let you adjust the audio sampling rate. Also, are you trying to encode and burn to dvd? If yes, try paste directly to DVDSanta or VSO DivXtoDVD (free version).
