Just how does one determine a DVD's Write speed.

For instance, I have a NEC 3540a DVD burner -- how would I determine the write speed that drive is designed for.

Thanks.

Could someone give me a clue on this one. Is there a status or properties check you can run, or something like that -- or do you have to locate the drive manufacturer's specs.

Actually, this is my son's drive and I wanted to send him some DVDs for Christmas, but don't know what speed DVDs to buy.

Thanks.

You could use Nero info tool. I think there are several such programs out there that'll tell you just about anything you could want to know about your system, drives and even manufacturer ID of the media you've got in there. If you haven't got Nero, search for info tool on somewhere like www.majorgeeks.com or I think I saw it in the downloads section of this site too...

But can save you the time if all you want to know is the max speed of it.. it should be 16x on DVD+R and DVD-R discs.. I have the NEC3520A and mine does that with latest firmware installed.

hope that helped

It would depend on what your son uses his dvd writer for as to what speed discs you should get him.. If he uses it for copying movies, then 16x would be great.. if he uses it for backing up his console dvd games then you'd probably be better off getting him some 8x in the DVD-R format. Good makes to get are Taiyo yuden, ritek, verbatim, tdk, ridisc extreme, sony. If you don't know what he uses it for, might be worth discretely asking so that you can get him the correct sort or just sneak a look ;)
good luck with that
