Hi everyone,
I have a Samsung TS-H552B DVD Writer running on Windows XP. I have backedup on both +/-R for quite some months now, with no problem whatsoever. All of a sudden the dvd writer stopped burning correctly.
The dvd gets burned but is not playable, neither on the pc nor on a standalone player. I get no errors when burning and I've used both dvddecrypter and nero. If however I turn verify on (on both software), I get a verify error after the dvd has been burned.
I've updated the firmware, dma is turned on, downloaded and installed the latest aspi, tried different media, but to no avail.
Any help please?!

What kind of media are you using? What is the burn speed? What is the target size of the burn?
Can you post a burn log?
Cheers.

I've used Datawrite Titanium +R and ATi +R both 8X. I've burned on HP +R 8X before without any problems. I've set the speed to 8X and 4X but no luck. I've also set dvd shrink for 4300MB, but again, dvd cannot be read after successful burning (verify detected problems again).
Funny thing is that I tried burning on Datawrite Red -R 4X just now and the dvd played well.
here's the nero log

Anybody got a clue please? Could this be a compatibilty issue with new +R maybe?! As I've said before I burned on +R media in the past using both Nero and DVD Decrypter

Quote: Nero Version: 6.6.0.13
- not too bad, latest 6.x version is 6.6.0.18 but your issue here isn't Nero itself
Quote: Last possible write address on media: 2295103 (510:01.28, 4482MB)
Last address to be written: 2286002 (508:00.02, 4464MB)
- 4464MB is burning too close to outer edge of discs. If you use DVD Shrink, set target size to 4300MB in Shrink's preferences thus avoiding outer edge and not sacrificing much space

I am inclinded to agree with creaky on this. Better media is called for and slow the burn down to 4x and target size of 4300.

I set the size to 4300MB in DVD Shrink, but got the verify error again. Maybe it is a media compatibility issue. What media (brand) do you suggest?

This is so strange...
I have the same problem and it started yesterday.
Till yesterday, everything was fine. I burned lots of TDK with no problems. But now, I have errors when verifying.
I tried with different media (Fuji, Maxwell), 4x and 8x, I changed the IDE cable, I change the controller (I put the burner on a PCI raid controller), even I changed the burner (an LG with a BENQ). Alos, I tried with latest Nero 7 and with Ones. Still, the same problem!!! WTF?
My mainboard is evga nforce 4 sli, amd64 3700+ 2gb ocz (driver 6.70).
Why????????

@coroner4 -
let's have LAST section of your Nero log which lives in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log but DO NOT post your serial number which usually begins with '1A21' or similar.
You can differentiate sections via this section divider "====== *** Nero-Burning Rom, History File *** ======"

I tried again and it's happening again! :(
I'm only one small step away from crying, for God's sake!
The mainboard, cpu, memory are brand new. In the last two weeks, no problem and I burned at least 20 dvds. I'm sure is not the LG birner cause I tried with 2 different ones, and the same problem: burning succesfully (90% of the time) but verification errors.
I will pay the one who will fix this! PM your paypal acount! I'm serious! I really want to get to the bottom of this.

(slightly colourul language edited out) :). but i can see why you're frustrated. see here for getting DMA back ON for the drives, you have those frustrating 'nvatabus' drivers, this link will help more - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/268664

I have a similar problem with Nero and a Lite-on burner. The burner is very erratic with Nero, but works perfectly with DVD Decrypter. On another computer I have Nero and a Sony writer, and I have never had a problem.
To verify that your burner and disks are OK, you might want to use DVD Decrypter to read and write a file in ISO mode. If this works, then the next step would be to reinitialize your Nero setup

I dont think it's the DMA off from Nero log (cause the DMA is ON 100%, Nero got it wrong).
I checked nerohistory. I had always DMA Off in the log, but tens of succesfully burning and verifications. Only the last several burning attemps have verification errors, everything else is identical.
I dont want to change the media, etc.
My mind is very simple. If something was working just fine, I want to know exactly WHY it's not working now. Even if lets say it will work with a different media and a different software, still I'm not happy because the problem it's not fixed, just ignored.
Thanks for all your help so far!

@coroner4 - will see if i can find a better thread for info on the 'nvatabus' drivers.
edit- see this link here - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/3/231433#1304083
kurtp21 found the fix; i think this was for 'nvidesm' drivers but as far as i remember it's the same difference, ie get rid of the nvidia IDE controllers and install standard microsoft drivers

Your firmware version is 2 behind. Current is A105 you can get it here: http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_result.php?kaj=1&isces
I noticed cause I have the same drive.
I'm sure this will help.
Quote: Disc Manufacturer ID: CMC.MAG.
I'm also sure that this will not help. CMC MAG is crap media and costs just as much as good media. Get some Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, Maxell.
Cheers

Guys, great replies so far! I heard "rumours" about this forum, like great mods and users. Now, the rumour is solid fact for me.
I will update my firmware, also I will put microsoft ide drivers and I will let you know how it worked.
Now I know the media isnt great (on the box is TDK - from Costco), but I'm puzzled because so far I didn't have any problems with it.
Where do I find Taiyo Yuden in Toronto?
Thanks again guys! I will let you know how it works...

Ok, did those.
From the log:
[...]
Recorder: <HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4163B>Version: A105 - HA 1 TA 0 - 7.0.1.4
[...]
DiskPeripheral : IC35L080AVVA07-0 atapi Port 0 ID 0 DMA: On
DiskPeripheral : Maxtor 6L300R0 atapi Port 0 ID 1 DMA: On
DiskPeripheral : Maxtor 6L300R0 atapi Port 1 ID 0 DMA: On
CdRomPeripheral : HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4163B atapi Port 1 ID 1 DMA: On
[...]
I tried first 4x with my TDK media:
Disc Manufacturer ID: CMC MAG, Media Type ID: E01, Product revision number: 0
It didnt work :(
Almost at the end of the disc (the total amount to burn was ~3.5GB), I had a verification error :
9:26:50 PM #27 SectorVerify 11 File Cdrdrv.cpp, Line 9531
Sector 353496 on disc has different content to source
9:26:50 PM #28 Phase 81 File dlgbrnst.cpp, Line 1725
Data verification failed
It was a major disapointment, let me tell you! I was sure that updating my firmware and using the Microsoft IDE drivers will help me get rid of this problem. It didnt.
Then I tried again with a different media (FUJIFILM, at least this is what is written on the disc):
Disc Manufacturer ID: RITEK, Media Type ID: R03, Product revision number: 2
Burned at 8x.
It worked!!! No errors. But I know that it's an isolated case. After burning ten more dvds without errors I can say that my problem is gone.
Still I don't believe the media is the issue. As I told you, burned tons of TDK without any problem...
9:59:56 PM #27 Phase 80 File dlgbrnst.cpp, Line 1725
Data verification completed successfully
After I will burn some more, I will let you know...
Thanks again!!!
