@coroner4 - that's the whole point of inconsistent discs, they're inconsistent :)

see this link in my sig, it'll explain why. Basically companies such as TDK use varying quality of disc manufacturers, hence why you may sometimes get a better batch than normal, ie it may be a different manufacturer that made them, but you can't tell from the packaging - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/232406

Hi, I'm having the same problem... the discs have appeared to be burning fine, but verification is picking up a horrendous amount of read errors (sometimes, as in the accompanying log, around 100)... I've checked ASPI, DMA is on, upated my firmware, checked the drivers, and i'm currently in the process of climbing the walls in frustration... EVERY ONE of my burns is coming out with these errors, regardless of the size of the files i'm trying to burn. Is it my media ? I thought LG were pretty good though... or could it have something to do with the fact that i replaced my motherboard recently? PLEASE HELP!!!

Here's the log of one such burn - i know it's quite a large burn, over the recommended 4300Mb, but as i said, i've been getting this problem with all sizes of burns, and this file size has never been a problem before.

Some times the answers are so simple, people just hate to admit it because they've invested so much time seeking a solution. Psych 101... LOL

For the thread,
When you have a problem burning and you've burned multiple DVDs on various formats and nothing fixes the problem, then miraculously you put in different media and things work; that should tell you something. Media Problem!

Everyone should get a copy of DVD Identifier (solely for checking manufacture IDs), a freebie. There's the free utility app DVDInfoPro that will do it and programs like Nero will ID media. As creaky pointed out, not all media sold under a single brand are always by the same manufacturer. You can imagine how things shift when you view the overall marketplace. ID the media and know what you're using. Then try to consistently use quality media. If using the cheap stuff, at least keep up with the "stuff" that works and those that don't. You can't always rely on just a brand name. Media related problems are probably the cause of more failed burns than any other problem. There's firmware updates, because the burner doesn't support the media; cyclic redundancy, because the media is smudged; format issues; burn speed issues on certain media; and the "biggy", just plain crappy media.

Sounds like this thread should have been in the media section. LOL

Thank you for the link!

As per my problem, I didn't have the guts to burn stuff and test again. Yet. I don't want to be dissapointed and frustrated again, not now when Chrstimas is coming :)

Can someone tell me where can I find TY media in Toronto?
Thanks!

Problem is a person has to sift through it because some of the info is dated and some is sheer bunk; like not burning to the edge of media because the dye at edges is bad. They should follow your other advice, use good media. Then they wouldn't have to worry about the other. Labels are okay as long as they're put on with a tool that centers them properly. Balance issues crop up when they're not straight or when the adhesive fails. Coming loose can be seen. To prevent the eventual adhesive failure, I went to just using a marker. I have some discs nearly two years old with labels and they've never caused a problem. Burning too fast? How fast is that. Normally I burn at 4X, but sometimes I forget and the resulting 8X burns are good to date. But I use good media, good software and good equipment. A friend of mine burns at 6X all the time. I don't know about 16X though. That media isn't plentiful yet anyway. All the stores I frequent are selling 8X and sometimes there may be some closeouts on 4X. So 4X no longer has to be the reasonable limit many have come to say. It's the way of quotes, they start and then people just keep using them.

Do they sell Verbatim, Sony, or Fuji 8X +R made in Japan? With Verbatim it might be MCC as well, but it is just as good. Most of the time TY in the generic TY brand is difficult to buy in stores. It's easy enough to find online in the US, but I'm not sure about Canada.

Hi coroner4,

I buy all my TY from http://www.blankmedia.ca

Yes there is shipping fees, but probably cost less than 49 costers of a 50 media Memorex DVD pile :)

Thanks cougar_ii!
What should I buy? DVD-R or DVD+R? My burner supports both of them (LG-4163B). So far, I used only DVD+R.

EDIT: OK, I ordered 2 x DVD+R 8X TAIYO YUDEN SILVER LACQUER (50 PCS).
Man, I was never excited about dvd media :) Now I am! And they are so cheap! 25CAD. And the shipping only 7CAD. And I will have them on Friday. Great!!!

After taking the whole bunch of LG's back to the shop - full refund (YAY!, AND i had to do it in a foreign language too - NOT easy...), I then tried a Verbatim DVD-R 8x (MCC 02rg20) at around 3 times the price, and hey presto - whadayaknow? zero read errors! I reckon they're bottom of the range Verbatim though, quite a lot of PI/PO failures on Nero DVD Speed, but totally free of bad sectors... and at least I now know that moving halfway across Mexico didn't royally shaft my lite-on burner. *grins*

Brobear, your infinite wisdom is indeed a force to be reckoned with. I owe you a beer. Or ten.

Now all i need to do is find somewhere in Mexico that sells spindles of Verbatim or Taiyo Yudens at a decent price... any suggestions? :oP

With NAFTA, maybe you can get on the net and have some shipped to you from North of the border. I'm not familiar with the stores. Do they have a Wal Mart anywhere nearby? LOL By the way, I'll go a long way for a good beer, or 10. Luckily my storage fridge is stocked up right now. I don't mind your local drinks either. Corona is good on a hot day and the tequila will put you away at night. LOL Jose Cuervo was a good friend of mine... wasn't there a song?

BTW, there's a forum for media here on AD. Here's a little thread that I frequent. http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/18/114809#1555593 There's a bit of info in there besides the incessant chatter of a certain bear. LOL

Sounds like Wally and company ticked you off. They carry decent brands here in the States. I have no idea down your way. Any of the Sony, preferrably made in Japan. Most any of the major brands made in Japan. They usually carry Verbatim. Then there's Imation, Maxell, and Fuji. I've had decent luck with those. I try to avoid the no name and unknown brands as much as possible. Sony's have been a favorite the past few months.

Hmmm... I think that it was here that I read about labels creating a problem with DVD's so I stopped using them and got an Epson R-300 ink jet that prints directly on media. (I never had problems with labels on my CD's but I figured that DVD's spin at a much faster rate and contain much more data...)

So is there any ink jet printable media that you would recommend?

Thanks in advance!

Steve A.

P.S. I'm on my second R-300 printer... they are very tricky to use for printing on CD's and DVD's. I have to push the tray in manually at exactly the right time, and then it does work okay. Maybe 80% of the time. You can buy a factory refurbished R-300 on sale at Fry's for less than a set of the 6 Epson cartridges but I believe the rebate on that is finally expiring. Epson has come out with a R-320 printer but I haven't tried that one yet.

Even when put on correctly adhesive labels are destined to fail. Keeping them in an environmentally stable storage area helps, but adhesive failure will eventually take place and then the disc gets knocked out of balance. Then problems start...

Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, Maxell, and RiData are some of the inkjet printables I'd recommend. I'm sure others may have some suggestions. I'd say the Verbs and TYs are about the tops though. You can check out Meritline for a long list of offerings. Some of them may be questionable; I've heard varying reports on Accu, Podisc, and BenQ.

Hi,

Having similar problem but in weired way. and some more problems too.

Talking about inspiron 9300. Drive is SONY DVD +/-RW DW-D56A.

I am getting verification error at the end of the burn using NERO6. The DVD runs fine ( or seems to be ruuning fine). Problem happens for Philips DVD+R.

DRive does not accept Nexttech DVD+R.

Writes on DVD+RW from RIDATA, but at a speed 1/4 of which it displays. It displays 4x but burn takes an hour to finish.

I'm having the same error. Firmware (plextor 716al), eide drivers (both microsoft and amd), and Nero updates have been applied, and tried. Taiyo media doesn't work. I've decided this has to be a driver or registry error; burning works in safe mode.....
any idea where I should continue?

Damn - Mexico sucks for media. NOWHERE has any DVD's made in Japan... and no internet companies will ship here either :'(

At least the tequila and tacos rock :o)

Any suggestions on what "made in Taiwan" media to use? Are the Taiwanese Riteks any good?

Most Riteks I have heard of have been pretty good. For a while, they were a forum favorite. I can personally vouch for the Sony; I've had excellent results from the Taiwanese version. I'm using the 8X +R format. Some of the Verbatim is Taiwanese as well, I've not heard any complaints on those. What do you have to choose from?

... And you mean to say they have real tacos and tequila in Mexico? I thought they'd shipped all that North. LOL Do they have an burritos and quesadillas left? ;)
