Does anyone know why the vast majority of my music library, that I transferred from my old laptop to my new laptop, won't play? Windows Media Player (not my favorite player, but the one that came with the machine) will always try to connect to the net every time I click on about 75% of my tracks. If I'm not online it says I'll have to connect to play the track. I'm guessing it's a license thing but why should that happen? They played fine on my old machine. I've tried Winamp and a couple of other well known players and the same thing happens.

I'm using a 3.0Ghz machine, 512meg RAM, running Windows XP Professional. Other details on request. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks Walden

For the best quality mp3s use EAC (exact audio copy) to rip your audio CDs and LAME to encode them. Follow this guide:

Sorry, bit of a novice at this.... most if not all are wma files. Yes yes, I know, shouldn't have used windows media player but I did and now I'm stuck. By the way, can anyone recommend a good alternative?

Thanks for any help you may be able to give.

So these wma files are ones that you created yourself with WMP? They shouldn't have any DRM crap or anything on them...thats interesting. Do you have the latest version of WMP on it? It sounds like you're just missing a wma codec perhaps. Try googling for a wma codec plugin. That might do the trick.

WMP is a horrible ripper, and WMA files aren't much better. A great alternative is EAC (exact audio copy). It is free and hands down the best ripper there is. When used with the LAME mp3 plugin, and encoded at 192 kpbs VBR (variable bitrate), you will create very nice mp3s way better than your WMA files. Here is a link on how to setup and use EAC:
