I have read quite a few entries on backing up ps2 games.
For example
"Quick way to copy a game. Assuming you have the original game dvd and want to back it up.

step#1

open dvd decryptor then go to MODE>ISO>READ and then it will copy the game and make an iso file on your pc hdd.

Step#2

when that finishes go to MODE>ISO>WRITE and then select the iso file that decryptor just maade. It will burn the file to the dvd and presto you are done.

Simple as that. "

Is this simply a backup disk, to use to make a new game if my original gets damage? Or is it actually a backup game to be used straight away (not extra fuss) if my original gets damaged?

Actually, it is that easy. BUT your ps2 needs to be modded to play the burnt game.

need to mod your system in some way to play them.
A mod chip is just one of the ways to do it.
Boot discs (SWap Magic) and an aftermarket flip top is another
just search the post as this is asked all the time and been
answered more times than i care to mention.

most people make back ups so they can put away the original
and use the back up so the original stays in perfect shape.
Or if they have kids who are prone to damaging the discs so they
do not have to keep going out and buying replacemnets all the time.

It would really help if you knew what chip it has. Different chips have different booting directions (some even require a boot disc). Have you been able to play any burnt game in it?

yes, different boot methods and also different features.
some are better than others.
Is there any logo or name on the screen when you start the PS2
or back up game other than PS2 or Playstation?
Like DMS4 chips display a skull and the word Toxic
Matrix Infinity chips usually have something too.
I always try to strees this to people when they buy a chip,
knowing which chip you have is very important. It is hard to help
people out if you don't know what they are working with.
