@ozzy214

Could you point me to that thread, or give me a few tips on how to connect my laptop to transfer files to my desktop? Tried everything so far with no luck.

Need to answer a few questions first. Do you have a lan card in ya laptop or ya trying wireless hook up?

If the lap top is hard wired to your desktop then it should be as simple as going to network connections and then click set up home or small office network. Make sure both computers are on. Then run the wizard on ya desktop and then on ya laptop. Then reboot to take effect even if it dont ask ya too.

Now if your trying to share files and internet acess then you need two lans in your desktop. That is if ya have broadband not dial up. One for internet and one for the laptop.

Now if its wireless its a whole nother ball game. Yeah got to give some details what ya trying to do. If ya want to share files and have internet on both. If ya have internet on the desktop via broadband.

:>

All I need is to transfer large files from the laptop to my desktop. I've got lan and wireless on both and have tried each option. I am preferring to go the wired direction. Tried the network connection via ethernet cables but it wouldn't recognize the two being connected to each other.
\just an add-on\
Would it have been because I had different firewalls installed on each computer?

As long as you dont have internet running through the lan on the desktop then it should be no problem to share files. I was just wondering about the internet thing cause then you would need two lans in ya desktop turning it into a router essentialy and even then the desktop would ve able to share files and the laptop not unless ya dropped the firewall on the lan feeding the laptop.

Anyway back to this. If ya running anything other than windows fiewall, then you gonna have to either open a port through the aftermarket firewall or turn it off.

go to control panel, then network connections. Right click the lan and select properties. Go to the advanced tab. There you will see a button for settings for the firewall for the lan. Click it and then either turn off the firewall on the lan or just open a port. This way if ya have two lans in a ya desktop you can leave the internet one firewalled and the file sharing un-firewalled.

Im not sure of the correct port to open, but google around. Ya should find it. But I betcha ya using aftermarket firewall's and the problem is a port needs to be opened. The network wizard wont configure any firewall except windows firewall for network sharing. Hope this helps:>

I only have one ethernet cabel port in my computer. Is there a way to use that same port to transfer files to my laptop and use the internet connection from there. I don't mean at same time but, unpluging one and using it for other purpose.

Yes, but then you would have to run network setup wizard. The best way is go buy a router. I got a linkysy router with vonage telephone service and its great.

That would be ya best. Then you can share files, and internet access. Plus vonage great unlimited calling plan anywhere in canada or us for 27.99.

I currently have the linkysy powering vonage and two computers for internet and file sharing. No problems. It was simple as using network wizard on both comps and rebooting. No configuration needed with the router except for internet usuage. Ya have to configure it to clone ya router and set it for dns servers.:>

Is ya best bet man. Much easier than running the wizard and rebooting every five minutes. Unless ya put another lan card in ya desktop and effectively turn it into a router.:>?
