Hey guys.
I'm not very farmilar with the terms describing ways to bootup a PS2, but this is how my PS2 works.
My PS2 is one of the older ones and so I boot the "gameshark" method (I think that's what it's called). Like when you load up one of those "cheat" disks such as gameshark (I use Action Replay), then you swap it with a "real" PS2 disk, then you swap the copy into the PS2.
Is this what people refer to as "Swap Magic"?
Well, this method takes around 30 secs longer than just booting it via direct boot, but I've had no problems. (This was the only method avaliable when I got my PS2.) But lately, a few games wouldn't load up.
Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30, Earned in Blood, and SOCOM3.
I use Devil May Cry to boot the disks up, got that game since I was told that it is biggest capacity so it's better. I checked the size of the 3 disks above and they are all over 4GB... and my DMC is around 4GB as well.. can someone who knows more about this boot method tell me, if the reason is becuase Devil May Cry is too small? Would I need to buy something like Genji to fix my problem?

I doubt you'll get many if any answers to your questions.. and it's not people being rude. Most people use either swap magic (there's a link to this in my sig if you want to know more about it) or a modchip now.
You may want to consider one of these options as the games manufacturers are coming up with more and more ways to try and stop people copying them... one of the ways is to make the toc bigger by putting in fake files. But the games themselves can be pretty big too, so unless you can get a very high toc disc to use your method, it'll soon reach the point where you won't be able to boot your copied games... I hope that made sense? it's not completely accurate before anyone starts disagreeing.. it's just my way of looking at it!!
You could try a high toc game like god of war (or any dual layer game for that matter) to use as your toc swap for gameshark.

Thanks for your reply. Well, I read breifly about Swap magic and thought that it sounded similar to the way I boot my disks, didn't know it was actually different. How much does swap magic cost, really? It would cost me like $60CAD+ for a PS2 game like God of War, so it really isn't worth it. I know I can get a modchip professionally installed for ~$90CAD. I just want to find out if it really is the problem, since Playstation 3 is coming in less than a year, and it doesn't seem to be worth it to invest anymore on the Playstation 2, at least not a lot of money.

You already ahve a way of swapping discs without the ps2 resetting right? as you use the gameshark?
The swap magic discs cost around £15 here in the UK, and a fliptop case cost about £13 or so... so in all it costs less than 1 game.
I would go with the modchip if you can get it that cheap professionally installed.

Yup, the gameshark method works no problem, except for just now.
So, what's a fliptop case anyways? With swap magic, does everything work as long as you have the disk? Or do you need a cartridge to put into the memory card slot like you do for the gameshark?
Lol, $90CAD isn't cheap, that can buy 2 new games or 5 games around 3-6 months old.

A fliptop case is so that you can swap the discs without resetting your ps2.
The swap magic discs are all you need (in conjunction with a fliptop or slidecard for the chunky ps2). So you just put in the swap magic dvd or cd depending on what your backup is on.. wait for the load screen which is about 10-20 seconds... then open the fliptop (or open tray using the slidecard), swap the disc for the backup disc, close the fliptop (or tray using the slidecard), press x to boot the game... and away you go.
It's cheap for getting a modchip installed is what I meant... You'd only be able to buy 1 new game and have a bit left over for $90cad here.

Ok, thanks anyways. I was thinking, if only a cd/dvd is necessary, then there must be some torrents out there that have the swap magic disks so I wouldn't need to buy it :P
Lol, but it turns out I need some kind of hardware as well? Hardware = $$, software = download, lol.

Also, you wouldn't be able to use a downloaded version of swap magic as you'd need an original version to boot it.

Do you actually own the game or do you download it/rent it and burn it? Because if you don't own the game, then what you are doing is ILLEGAL. And even if you could download and boot Swap Magic, then that is still ILLEGAL.
