Best XVID codec/compression options?

Hey guys, quick question for you.

I know that xvid will give you the most compressed/smallest file...but i was wondering if you guys had any tips for me on making it the smallest possible file, while keeping its quality.

I use virtual dub, a lot...on a daily basis, and I download about 50 gig a month of media.

When I do full processing mode, and choose the xvid codec...there are a lot of options to choose which I never touch. I basically just hit OK, and reencode a divx to xvid...that alone saves me half the space...but i was wondering if there were any gurus out there that could point me to some important options in the codec section of VDUB to make it smaller.

Example - I append to 800 meg files to 1.6 gig (rougly) - I then reprocess to xvid (end result is 800meg with default settings).

I want to see if I can make it smaller...say 300-500mb on 800 meg xvid codec?

Any help would be great. thanks.

You should be using fast recompress. Full processing means converting to RGB24 which reduces quality and results in longer encoding times.

The only thing that determines filesize is the bitrate. Although from recollection the default XviD setting is constand quant 4. Still the higher the quant, the lower the bitrate. You could also try a low bitrate matrix, this will give you smaller filesizes per quant.
