Editing a DVD+-RW Video Disc

I recently bought a SONY Camcorder DV602 thinking that it is more convenient than my existing Mini DV camcorder. I thought I will NOT need any Firewire anymore to transfer the data to my computer. But I now realised that my Pinnacle editing software can't edit the DVD+-R format.
1. Does anyone know besides the simplistic SONY editing software for DVD +-R, which software is applicable for this format?
2. How can one convert DVDR into DIVX or AVI? Which DVD Ripper is suitable?
