Well personally I've never shrunk a DVD-9 game to DVD-5, because my modchip supports DVD-9 games. Does it give you an error message when you try to export the iml files?

My guess would be that when you exported your iml files you didn't specify where to put them, so they've gone to a default place.... go into the windows start menu to the search function, and search for files and folders named *.iml, that should find you any iml files you have on your hard disc... or you could just do it again, but when you export the iml files and the windows explorer window comes up and prompts you for a name, don't forget to choose a location.

There are several threads on NFSMW. Search a little. In general the same good burning principals apply. You may need to rebuild.
. Q. How do I burn PS2 games?
A. Use DVD Decrypter.
Guide: http://www.angelfire.com/games6/easytutorial/dvddec/dvddec.html Burn at 4x on an 8x DVD-R.
2. Q. Does the type of media I use matter?
A. YES: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/1/240341 If you're too lazy to read, use Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, Ritek, Sony, TDK, Maxell, Sony or Phillips DVD-R's. Avoid Memorex, Staples, Imation, Dynex, Princo, Bulqpaq, etc.
CMC Magnetics is garbage. Need proof (Thanks to Alkohol):
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/1/262544 If you really want to do the PS2 backup thing right, pick up some Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim's. I only burn to TYG02, the 8x Taiyo Yuden DVD-R's. So far I've never had a lag, skip, freeze, or boot failure since I switched to Taiyo Yuden's. With results like that, why would I use anything else?
3. Q. Do I need some type of mod to play PS2 backups or imports?
A. Yes you need a modchip: http://teammodders.com/ps2_mc.php?ex=2 Swap Magic: http://swapmagic3.com/ Memory Card Exploit (Doesn't work with v.11 PS2 and later): http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/109289 HD Loader: http://www.hdloader.com.au/hardinstall#prepare or
HD Advance: http://www.hdadvance.com/hd_advance_how-to-use.htm
13. Q. Game X doesn't boot with Swap Magic, what do I do?
A. Make sure your backup is burned properly. Use good media as posted in the link above.
10. Q. What does rebuilding an iso mean?
A. It means that some games 4.36-4.38GB's may need rebuilt to work with Swap Magic. This isn't true for ALL games over 4.38GB's and differs on a game to game basis. There is no need to rebuild games if you have a modchip. Another purpose of rebuilding is to make games run smoother. Usually the size of the game after rebuilding is smaller, but not always. If you're a Swap Magic user, make sure to look out for dummy files when rebuilding.
11. Q. How Do I rebuild games?
A. With Nero and Isobuster (works as long as no single file is over 2 GB's): http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/197949 With CD/DVDGen: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/210515 With Expert (Gnie's new rebuilding tool):
Gnie's PS2 Auto Rebuilder Tool Download (Thanks to 3DLuis):
http://www.alucard.cc/ps2/ExPERT_v1.03.rar
Instructions to Gnie's Tool ExPERT:
From Anthony 05:
Download it and then follow these instrcutions and it will work.
1. select Shrinker_ps2_psp_CdDvd5_iso.epi on the plugins list.
2. Select the iso.
3. Click extract LBA
4. Click extract file
5. Click rebuild file
6. Click rebuild lba.
Make sure you do it in that order.
This worked for me when every other way failed.
It is very easy to do so even the noobies should be able to do it.
Keep in mind im backing up the PAL version, but if your having trouble backing up with NTSC then i dont see a problem trying.
Good luck.

6. Q. Can I burn Swap Magic, Breaker Pro, HD loader, or HD advance?
A. No the only way to boot a backup of these is with a modchip, an original version, or a MC exploit.

while i agree they cant be booted without a modchip, you can burn them, I've got the ISOs of HD Loader in CD and DVD format and a PM with your valid ISP email address will get them for you, hotmail/yahoo and other free services as well as AOL most of the time reject the files due to size.

Well yeah that's what I meant is that they cannot be booted without an original copy or modchip. You can burn them, but a backup of any of those is usless without some means of booting it, either an original copy, a modchip, or a MC exploit in the case of HD Advance or HD Loader. I know you know what I meant, just clearing it up. I was assuming from his posts that he didn't have an original copy of Swap Magic or a chip, and quite frankly that gets asked so much that I cut and pasted the reply from my FAQ. Cheers!

most any of the resellers will ship to you in the islands and price is dependent on which chip you want to go with, your looking at from 20 bucks at the bottom of the line to 70 bucks for a top of the line chip.
and a burnt copy of any disk (swap magic and the HD loader/advance included) will not boot without a modchip or an original swap magic disk.

Hey Tokijin, maybe you can help me.
I'm trying to make a backup of the JAP version of Xenosaga. I want to play it from the HDD, because I can't play it with my American PS2. I already know about the multiple guides that explain how to burn a DVD-9 into your PS2 Hard drive. I also know there are guides for this specific game too. And I know I have to flatten the disc by putting all the files in one layer, but the problem is I don't have access to the files in the second layer.
I tried using Apache like the guides say, but when I switch to the second layer, there are no files.
According to this guide:
http://www.exploitstation.com/articles/dvd9single.php it's as easy as making an ISO with DVD Decrypter and then opening it with Apache and switching layers, but I tried multiple versions of Apache, and they all show the same (nothing).
I also tried many different computers, (some with Dual Layer DVD-Burners), so it's not my DVD-ROM either.
If you or anybody can think of an idea why the files aren't showing, please tell me, as I am going crazy with this issue.

how large is the ISO you read with DVD Decrypter? and you can play the full DVD-9 from the HDD without downsizing if you so choose.

i was asking his ISO size to see if he has an edited version (single layer) and that could be why he doesn't get a second layer in Apache.

No, it's strange, the ISO is over 8GB, so the files are there, but it's as if they were encrypted in a language Windows cannot understand, because when I mount it or try to read it with Apache, only half of the files show up.
And I have the original game, so there's no doubt about it being an "edited" version.

[edited] sorry, was going to say that you need to switch layers, but read an earlier post by you and you already tried it.

make sure you have windows set to not hide protected files. sometimes game disks have protection on the files and windows will hide them, this may be your problem.

Ok, I just figured out a lot of things.
First of all, I found out that Xenosaga Reloaded is the problem.
I bought the three versions of Xenosaga. The US version, the JAP version and Xenosaga: Reloaded (all originals). The US version and JAP, work just like the multiple guides say. Just make an iso and both layers can be extracted with Apache, no problem.
Second, this guide http://www.hdadvance.com/hd_advance_how-to-use.htm won't work with this game. I wish it was that easy. If it was, we wouldn't have to worry about extracting the files from the ISO.
After creating the ISO, you have to rebuild it. The best way to do it is using CDGenPS2.exe, because the original CD/DVD Generator won't create an iml for an image biger than 4.7Gb. If you use CDGenPS2, you don't need an iml file, you can go to File > Save Image and it will create an ISO as big as you like.
THEN you can transfer that ISO to the HD and play it with HDLoader. But make sure you activate Mode 2, or you'll get the black screen with the radar when you try to start a new game.
You can use HDLoader or HDAdvance 3.0. Both work, but if you use HDloader, make sure it's the 48bit version or the Fully Patched Ver 0.7c.
I did this with Xenosaga JAP, and it worked perfectly.
I even converted a couple savegames from the US version into the JAp, loaded and worked just fine. I just watched the unedited JAP movies at the end of the Song of Nephilim and also loaded the last savegame to watch the ending.
I didn't try playing the US version from the HD, but I had no problem extracing the files, even the second layer. So I'm sure the US version will work too, since all the guides out there are for the US version.
But now the problem is Xenosaga: Reloaded.
Xenosaga Reloaded is the re-release of the American game in Japan.
Therefore, it has the same cutscenes as the US version (with voices in English), but the text is in Japanese.
So I figured, if the cutscenes are the same, I can rip them from the US version and put them in the Reloaded version.
Not quite.
The game doesn't crash at New Game like it used to, but the opening sequence (which is in the second Layer), is completely skipped, and the game continues from the following cutscene (if Mode 2 is activated).
Also Reloaded gives you the option of replaying the cutscenes you already watcched. So I loaded the Xenosaga JAP Clear-Game savegame (it takes both the Original and the Reloaded versions of the savegame), and watched all the cutscenes one by one.
Most of them work fine, since they are in the first layer of the disc, But the ones that are in the second layer are either skipped or you may see it but not hear anything. And since I added cutscenes from the American version of the game, the ones that play with no sound have English Subtitles!! (Although, since the font in Japanese is bigger, the subtitles won't fit on the screen).
So from now on it's a matter of finding the correct address of each cutscene to fix the ones that don't play (or if somebody can finally figure out why the files in the second layer don't show up, better yet!)

kc
I'm pretty sure that's not the problem.
Not only I have Windows set up to always show hidden files, but even if I tried reading the disc/iso with Windows Explorer, the files from the second layer would NEVER show up (on either of the three versions of the game).
You HAVE to use Apache. So far it's the only program I found that reads the two layers in a DVD9.

I notice that Windows only picks up the first layer of DVD-9 games sometimes as well. When I go to rip the Iso, DVD Decrypter picks it up mine. Windows doesn't do this with DVD-9 movies. It must be something about how PS2 games are coded and somehow Windows just can't read the second layer. That guide should work, but I'll take your word for it. I'm out of ideas on this one except for shrinking it to DVD-5. There's a guide here: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/286290
