2.5 old?? Oh my....then my 2.2 must be ancient.

Boot failure problems exist when the BIOS cannot read from the drive, the MBR (master boot record) was corrupted somehow, or indeed the drive has failed, or your installation of Windows got corrupt.

Few things you can do.

Open the case and check your cables. Replace them if they are kinked, make sure they are nice and snug against the drive and motherboard.

Go into the BIOS and see if the drive is detected. If not...go to the drive manufacturer's website, and download the diagnostic program, and run it from the floppy drive. This prog will let you know if the drive could be recovered. If it does say the drive has failed, or will fail, replace the drive.

Once the drive has been detected:

Boot from an XP Setup CD and select to install XP. After you get to the options screen, select to install a fresh installation, press F8 to agree, and then see if Setup detects the drive. If it does, choose to do a Repair installation. You won't lose any info on the drive, but you will have to redo chipset (motherboard) drivers, video, sound...Windows updates.

However, you may wish to remove the drive first, and see if it's detected on another computer. This will give you an indication that it may be the motherboard's chipset that has failed. Which, means a new motherboard.

Hope that helps.

at least find out what hard drive you have.....turn off ,open case....look at this:

http://www.djonmac.com/drive/removecdromhd.html

follow those steps to find out what kind you have...western digital,hitachi,matox,etc..

then go to the manu site and get the tools to fix it...like formatting tools, scan tools, check disk, etc.

your best bet is as oz said,if you dont care whats on the disk,go buy new and reinstall windows....peace
