I have an older dell desktop pc with an 8x i/o magic dvd-rw. I am using dvdfab decrypter(free version) and Powerdvd copy to burn movies with no problems. My laptop is a hp zv5000t with an USB 16x i/o magic dvd-rw external. When copying new movies on this one it will burn half the movie and say copy successful. I am using the same programs installed from the same sources on both pcs, even the same os XP PRO. If I try the same movie on the desktop I have no problems. Any ideas why my laptop will not copy them? I think it is a hardware issue since the software is the same. If so how can I fix the problem if it can be fixed?

Is your haarddrive on your laptop formated Fat32 or NTFS. If it is formated Fat32 that's your problem. When messing with dvd's it's a must to be formated NTFS. To look to see right click on myComputer click manage then click on diskdefragmenter there it will show your file system.

Good Luck

not strictly true as FAT32 is 100% usable for DVD work but NTFS does make life a lot easier

As creaky stated you can backup a DVD with a FAT32 file system...I would start with checking to see that your firmware is up to date for your optical drive. You can check it at this site: www.rpc1.org
