divx and digital audio output question

I am having a hard time getting digital audio output (ac3). Using ffdshow with default settings, I can get stereo analog output. If I then enable dolby digital, and set the output from 16 bit to ac3, I get digital. Great!!!
However, with these settings, if I try to watch a video with only analog 2ch stereo, I get no sound. I then have to switch ffdshow to output 16 bit, thus loosing digital output for movies with digital 5.1.
Any ideas?? The two movies I am using as an example are Blackhawk Down and A Christmas Carol (1953 version) both ripped from DVD and then converted to avi with DIVX convert. The audio for both is MP3.

You can configure different preset load conditions. So a 5.1 source gets one preset, etc.

One other data point to add to my problem. The "analog" audio is 44100 Hz. The digital audio is 48000 Hz. And, I don't know how to tell FFDShow that the source is 5.1 vs. 2 channel stereo.

hi jrodbrook
i was converting a movie and i said "let's go to afterdawn maybe there is something new about converting" and i found some new interesting messages.
to convert from AVI (xvid, divx) to mpeg 2 i'm using "mainconcept mpeg encoder"..this program have alot of options and u can choose the quality you want and all the settings....after i have the mpeg 2 file i make the menu and chapters on "dvdlab pro" to have a nice dvdmovie just ready to watch.
my problem is just the audio...in this program i can select stereo, joint stereo, dual channel. etc...but i don't know if i can make the movie with AC3 audio like you said.
i have the FFDShow but i don't know how to use it..it just open with the program.
any ideas??

@PALToNTSC, your post is well off topic. Best that you start another thread, but MainConcept as far as I know doesn't do AC3 and FFDShow doesn't include an AC3 encoder, only decoding, even if it did, there would be no way to use it with MainConcept.

Don't get what you mean. Having one setting was your problem. You need two settings (presets) then you set the auto load conditions so that you get one for 5.1 and the other for 2 channel. So 2 channel = 1 preset and 6 channel is another. No auto load condition for the sample rate though I don't think. You can set it for the decoder though.

hi celtic,
yes i'm using mainconcept from a while. My opinion about converting is "how much you have progs in your hand..how much you can solve problems"...some movies are better with mainconcept..some are better with AVS video converter..some are better with another program..it depend on the orginal copie and to what you wanna convert. But the most of time i'm using mainconcept..it give me very good quality.
if i have mpeg2 file-->Avi i use AVS video encoder or studio 9..it depend like i said on what you want.
about your answer for the AC3 i didn't understand celtic what you meant. All what i'm doing is opening the mainconcept...adding the movie and for the audio i'm selecting (48khs, stereo, mpeg2 layer 2, 2 channel,)..the movie is copied well but sometime while i'm watching it..i can hear that the voices are not loud / to the sound of the movie....for exemple an explosion you hear it very loud..but the voice of the persons sometimes it's low..what means there is something wrong with the sound. (some movies, not all of them)
about menu and titles...well guys i worked many years in editing and camera man, and i tried alot of programs..but i never found a program like "DVDLAB PRO"..this program is soo professional....you can start with basic menu and arrive to subtitles for the movie etc. If someone need help, i'm ready to offer what i can
