I have a NEC DVD+RW ND-1100a and window's recognizes it just as a cd-rom drive and not as a CD/DVD burner. Does anyone know how to remedy this situation?

I've had this same problem too. After I burned my first ever movie w/ Nero, my drive just stopped working. At first it would not recognize the media I was inserting to write more dvds, but then it stopped reading any cd/dvd altogether. I started an in depth tread about two months ago on this subject in the Nero discusions section...I'm unsure if its there still. Basically, I tried everything under the sun to fix the problem including downloading firmware, uninstalling the drive, opening up the cpu and changing the drives and cables, etc.

Unfortunately, the only thing left to do now is to buy another dvd writer. I'm not sure if the NEC is still under warranty, but I'll check and post any results. If you guys think of anything to fix this problem, please post.

I have been burning for over a year, not sure if it finally decided to die or what. My computer knowledge is limited, right now I am almost bald from it. I will look into it more another day. Seems funny that it did this after new game installed. Hopefully someone with more knowledge than I will help me figure it out. Good luck to us !!

I am having a problem like this as well. it seems as if every 6 months or so my DVD+RW burner wigs out on me.

I have a NEC DVD+RW ND-1100A... I was burning some data DVDs earlier when one of the DVDs kicked out, and the burning program said there was some error. I try another one, and all of the sudden my drive won't read any DVDs at all. My other drive is just a DVD-Rom, and it reads everything fine. The DVD+RW burner can read CDs no problem, but not DVDs... burned, blank or like retail movie DVDs.

I already flashed the bios, thinking that was the problem (it always was previously), but it still won't read a thing.

Any thing you guys can think of?

PS: It was working fine about 10 mins before it started doing this. I was able to complete one burn, and had been burning CDs all week.
