Simple if you don't have any of them then you wont be able to play backups. You can get Swap Magic at eBay amongst others.

Yes, you can burn PS2 games with DVD Decrypter, but that's only if it's 4.5GB or under. If it's over 4.5GB, then your best bet is to rebuild the game (if you're a Swap Magic and FlipTop/SlideCard users). You don't need to "rebuild" any games if your PS2 console is modified with a modchip.
Just do a search like: "how to rebuild PS2 game(s), how to burn PS2 game(s)", and you'll tons of answers within minutes.

1. Q. How do I burn PS2 games?
A. Use DVD Decrypter. Guide: http://www.angelfire.com/games6/easytutorial/dvddec/dvddec.html Burn at 4x on an 8x DVD-R.
2. Q. Does the type of media I use matter?
A. YES: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/3/240341 If you're too lazy to read, use Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, Ritek, Sony, TDK, Maxell, Sony or Phillips DVD-R's. Avoid Memorex, Staples, Imation, Dynex, Princo, Bulqpaq, etc.
CMC Magnetics is garbage. Need proof (Thanks to Alkohol):
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/1/262544
3. Q. Do I need some type of mod to play PS2 backups or imports?
A. Yes you need a modchip: http://teammodders.com/ps2_mc.php?ex=2 Swap Magic: http://swapmagic3.com/ Memory Card Exploit (Doesn't work with v.11 PS2 and later): http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/109289 HD Loader: http://www.hdloader.com.au/hardinstall#prepare or
HD Advance: http://www.hdadvance.com/hd_advance_how-to-use.htm
. Q. What do I need to use Swap Magic?
A. With fat PS2 v.1-11: Flip top: http://www.chipzone.com/installation/playstation2/fliptop/page1.cfm Slide Card: http://www.saveware.com/SlideCardUsageAndInstall.htm With Slim PS2 v.12-14
Flip top: http://www.chipzone.com/installation/playstation2/fliptop-v12/pag... Magickeys (also referred to as slide tool, slim tool or, magic switch): http://magickeys.net/ or tape and tissue mod: From Pretense: If the fliptop doesn't work, just give up on it and do a tape and tissue mod. Open up your case again and tape the back sensor (toward the upper left and beneath the hinge part of the lid) with duct tape or even regular Scotch tape (I use several layers to be on the safe side), put the case back together, and stuff a small ball of tissue into the hole for the front sensor (lower right just above the power button).
Pics (Thanks to PSPness): http://www.geocities.com/pstwoslimline/tapetissue.htm my tape and more tape
Just about the same, just a change on Censor 'A' and Censor 'B'
Censor B - http://img393.imageshack.us/img393/572/dsc010703xc.jpg keep the top closed, while you tape down the disk stopper, using a few layers of duct tape
Censor A - http://img393.imageshack.us/img393/4342/dsc010698we.jpg use tiny strips of duct tape to patch over the tiny censor. I used a screwdriver to help put on the tape.
You can get Swap Magic from several sites. It's $20-$30 on most sites. I have a modchip, and well let's just say once you have a chip, you'll never go back to disc swapping. Swap Magic is an excellent product though.

Do a little searching, this gets asked all the time. No you can't download and burn Swap Magic. You need an original copy to boot PS2 backups. The only way to boot a backup of Swap Magic is with a modchip or an original copy. Yes you need to buy it. You can get it for $20-30 on most sites.

I agree with Tokijin.
@all newbies & who may concern,
You can not burn/backup any SM dics and use it to boot any of your burned PS2 games period. It's totally useless, it's a waste of time -- unless you already have a SM 3.0 and want to upgrade to 3.6 Plus, then that may be useful. Other than that, it's a totally a waste.

Probably so people can boot it with an earlier version of SM, like 2.0. Quit wasting discs, there's no point in backing it up, unless you own an original copy or a modchip.

# CLICHE ALERT # # CLICHE ALERT # # CLICHE ALERT # # CLICHE ALERT #
Hi folks, another clueless newbie here, hope someone can help me out before i start waisting time and money on a lost cause!
i just got swapmagic 3.6 with the slider tool yesterday, took me a while to figure out what to do (no instructions! - whats that all about!!) but im not even sure im doin the right thing!!
i load up the dvd version of it, it gets to the load program screen, i select PAL and then i tried to play a burned copy of fifa street, now id just burned it the night before using Nero ultra 6 as straight backup, i bought my dvds ages ago and they are unmarked so i dont know what kind they are but it wos 50 for £10 so dont imagine theyr the best quality. anyways it just said "NOT A PS2 DISC" tried it for a while then gave up.
Since i dont know whether its a duff disk or my method of swapping i tried it with a couple of original ps2 games and i couldnt get anywhere either, a couple of times it went from the swap magic screen to the browser screen but wouldnt load after selecting the disc icon.
all the while my ps2 is making little noises. Its a V3 i think!
If anyone could shed some light on the situation i would be very appreciative!!
if i cant even load real games from swap magic does this mean i am doing it wrong?
Oh yeah, this has been annoying me, everyone on here keeps advocating DVD Decrypter but you cant download it anymore from the links - does anyone know where i can find it!

I am new on ps2, so still in researching, just read this article, sounds like hdloader (usb extreme)is even better than SM3, I will give it a try! save laser head!
------------------------------------------------
For HD Loader you need a network card and to check compatibility lists for which hard drives.
For USB eXtreme, you can damn near throw anything in an enclosure and use it if it's 40-120 Gig (Maxtor up to 200Gig). Also this means any USB hard drive should work if you don't like plugging things in and saving money.
For USB eXtreme, plug in your hard drive to your PC and format it either NTFS or FAT32. You will have to format again with the PS2 so most people do NTFS first. Burn the USB Advance (Free edition, hehe) CD image and load it in the PS2 with your USB drive plugged in. Format the disk. Then plug it in your PC and load the USB eXtreme software to copy CDs or DVDs to the hard drive. Fastest way is to mount with Daemon Tools. Reading from DVD players takes extremely long but is worth it and you can still fo things on PC while it is working (just have to move the progress window out of your way).
If you need more "stuff" or exploits so that you can mod your PS2 without a chip, go to these sites:
http://www.eurasia.nu/
http://www.exploitstation.com/index.php?page=elfs
It's amazing what you can do with a PS2. Don't buy outrageously priced "tools," get the free versions, they work better too.
I don't have Swap Magic but those sites have a lot of info on them and it seems like you can do anything with them. I'm not sure but there might be a hacked version that works with an exploit. Swap Magic has made a killing off people so try and do it yourself because what will you do when your disk wears out? You'll need a hacked backup copy with an exploit anyway.
Most Importantly, don't use games and utilities you haven't bought. This is for backups and educational purposes blah blah blah. Hell, I guess if you don't have the cash it's ok to use whatever you want because nobody loses any money anyway. You will just lose a laser if you don't do something with a hard drive eventually, then you will have to buy an old worn out PS2 and start over or a new slim line which only allows USB hard drives.

Well no you could just get the laser replaced, that costs around $50 or so. That's a small price to pay if you invested in a good modchip. If you use quality DVD-R's like Taiyo Yuden, your PS2 laser won't wear down with backups much quicker than it would with originals. A HD is a good idea, but I'd go with Swap Magic, it has fewer compatiblity issues. Plus HD Advance doesn't support PSX games. HD Advance 3.0 is compatible with 95% of PS2 games or so.
