Why Can't DVD Back-Up Boot?

I have read extensively that PS2 back-ups cannot be played without reconfiguration of the chip set or a Swap Magic or whatever - what I'm curious about is, why?

If, indeed, the back-up image is an exact copy then why wouldn't it act like the original? I know that the answer is likely that, it is not an exact copy, but why not?

it's not an exact copy because the originals have data that's out of the range of a dvdrw (I believe it's too far on the inside) also, it has some bad bits on it which can't be copied by burners.

yep, that's preety much it.
It has sectors on an original DVD that your burner will
not copy, i beleive it is called the BCA (burst cutting area)
Since original DVD's are pressed discs and not burnt discs.
so you need a mod chip, or swap magic and one other modification
the swap disc will fool the PS2 into thinking it is an original
and the other modification you need, like a fliptop, is used
to stop the PS2 from reseting when you swap the discs. If you put in swap magic, then pressed eject to swap the discs the PS2 would reset and it would not work.
