Hi all.
Just started backing up my games. I got a swap magic 3.6 and the slide tool. I have used dvddecrypter to build the .iso file and to then write the backup (Call of Duty: Big Red One). The game loads ok, but when you start to play any of the FMV movies the audio seems to skip loads and sometimes the video is a bit jerky.
I am using Taiyo Yuden x16 dvds and burning them at 2x
Is there anything else I should be doing?

Yep, you could try burning at 4x or even 6x on those TY discs... 2x is a bit too slow, that's why you're getting the skipping etc. Try it and see how you go.
Next time you purchase discs try and get the TY 8x instead of the 16x, you don't need for them to be able to go that fast... you could always use the 16x for your movie backups and get some 8x for ps2 backups.

Anyway, that should sort your problem, but if not get the 8x and burn them at 4x.

Cool, didn't think it was possible to burn them too slow lol always been worried about burning to fast. I'll give that a try.

Thanks a lot.

No worries. You'll get a lot of different views on what's the best speed to burn at etc as a lot of people have different dvd writers and use different dvd brands to backup their games.. also some of the people that have been backing up games for years still use the same method as when the fastest burners we had were 2 or 4 speed... I think most people now use 8x DVD-R discs and burn at 4x.
I sometimes burn at 6x or 8x too... depending on what I am burning and how much of a hurry I am in etc. I have never had any problems with the games burnt that way either... but 4x is a good startign point until you get used to what will and won't work for your particular setup.

good luck with it

OK kinda related to my original question. Just started a new box of TY 16x media and now the backups are making a terrible rattling noise when the PS2 is trying to read them. I have tried burning at 2x, 4x, 6x and 8x and get the same results. If I do manage to get the PS2 to read the disc, when I take it out and try it again it won't re-read it at all.
Wondering if this new stack of TY media is faulty.

I tried backing up a DVD with this media and even at 6x it works perfectly. Is it possible that this new batch is not compatible with the PS2????

Backing up my PS2 DVD's seemed like such a good idea at the time lol

What's the MID code? and where did you did get/buy it from? According to my knowledge any genuine YUDEN and Maxell (made in japan) DVD+Rs plays flawlessly on my v9 PS2 console.

On a second thought, what's the make/model/firmware of your dvd burner? Your best bet is to get a TY DVD+R and book type inot DVD-ROM when backing up your games.

Drive is NEC-3540A firmware version 1.01
I looked for some updated firmware 1.3 seems to just add support for DVD-RAM discs.
The MID is TYG03 (looks genuine)

I think I'll take a drive over to my dads, he split the last cake of white faced media with me. I'll get some of them and keep trying. Otherwise I guess its back to ordering more media from SVP

You should always update your firmware when there is one available, so it will always staying on top of media and their MID. Firmware is like a brain, it will diagnose the blank media in prior to the burning process, it'll inspect and check for the best writing strategy for your drive, especially if you're using those new YUDEN media (TYG03).

Yes, the current firmware is 1.03, go here

Did you get the current media from SVP? if so then it's genuine Taiyo yuden... but why did you get the 16x and not the 8x? I would recommend getting the 8x next time for sure. are these discs dvd-r or dvd+r?

Let us know how you get on with it now that you've updated the firmware...
Also, before you burn make sure you turn off anything that could cause glitches/buffer underrun whilst writing, turn the internet off,anti-virus etc...and don't try to use the computer for anything.. might want to check that the screensaver won't come on too maybe.

[edit] oh forgot to add, make sure you select the mds file as the source for burning. In the folder where you saved the iso, what file have you got?

Yeah, I always get my media from SVP. They're really reliable.
The last couple of times I've bought media its been 16x and I've used it for DVD projects not PS2 so thought it would be ok.
Just pinched some of the older white lable Taiyo Yuden discs from my dad (these are also 16x) see how they go.
Might have to place another order for some 8x media if this doesn't work. Its really odd tho why the new media is so reliable in DVD players and not the PS2. Still I guess the PS2 is older technology.

Yep, I agree about SVP, I don't get my media from anywhere else now... you might want to check out their ridisc extreme 8x DVD-R discs... I use them for my ps2 backups and haven't had one coaster, and they're around £11 for 50 pack... I bought 200 of these last time I ordered and 75 verbatim 8x DVD-R with taiyo yuden code for my dvd backups.

good luck with your burns.. and merry christmas

I found out something else interesting today. I took the swap disc over to show a friend of mine and tried the silver TY discs on his PS2, they work perfectly!!!!
Does this mean there's something wrong with my PS2 or could it just be a dirty laser?? Mine plays the original discs fine.

@craig_p - Well, explain what games you were backing up and how you backed them up then to get the coasters????
Have you got the latest firmware for your dvd burner? what program did you use to burn and what speed? What version is your ps2 and what mod are you using to boot the backups with?

It must just be either that your burner doesn't like the risdisc or your ps2 then I guess.. I've burned some of those same games and they work fine on the ridisc on my burner NEC ND3520AW with latest firmware and on my V5 ps2.. In another thread you mentioned that the verbatim didn't like having movies burned on them but that the ridisc worked fine...
That sounds to me like it's a burner issue rather than a media issue, but as long as you can still use the discs for movies, then doesn't matter I guess.
I use both verbatim and the ridisc for movies and ps2 backups, doesn't matter which...
