i want to install a dvd rom drive but before i can do that i have to remove my C: drive which is only about 7gb big... I want to back up that whole drive on my d: drive which is 40gb big.... if i back up the drive and save it to a folder in my d: drive will i be able to remove the c:drive which has all win files and reg files a bunch of files that are needed to have my cpu running....

ghost your c: drive onto the d: drive but will wipe all info off the d: if not empty.

is there any way to keep all the files on my d: drive.. this drive i use to store media mostly music and movies not copyrighted material just copies of things i own is there any other way

You could just save any important files to your D:\ drive,
documents/pictures/music etc, also Internet Account Settings, EMail and Favourites. Don't forget movies :^)
But you CANNOT easily start your PC from that D:\ drive, once the C:\ has been removed - it doesn't work that way.
You must install new Windows onto your D:\ drive once it is moved to the primary controller and becomes C:\, and Windows might bitch that there is already a partition structure and filesystem in place.
I would first copy anything important OFF the 40GB and onto the 7GB, then switch the 40GB to the primary controller and install Windows, deleting any partition(s) and formatting NTFS.
Then, your 7GB could be introduced on the secondary controller (it will be assigned E:\ or whatever) and you can then copy important stuff into your new Windows installation.
Once the 7GB is cleaned out, remove it, thus freeing up the controller (for an optical drive or whatever).
This is your objective, right?
But you will need the WinXP disk...

actually i would leave the 7gig for windows as c: & use the 40gig for data & programs as d:.

what do you have for drives now besides the 2 hard drives? how many drive bays do you have as in 5.25" & 3.5"?

the 3 1/2 floppy should be on separate controller from teh other drives, though. you should still have at least one open space.

i just have no more power plugs like the ones that say p3 p2 p4 etc. i have no mor open slots .. i have an old pc with win 98 but i manage

can get a power splitter adapter cable or a psu with more power connectors on it.
