I can not figure it out. I cannot get the AC3 5.1 to encode onto the divx format. I select it, it encodes, picture looks great, but no AC3. All I get is 2 channel stereo.

I am using the latest "DivX Create Bundle v6.1"

I thought this new version of Divx supported this???

so you know. I have searched the guides. There is one on how to get AC3 to work with the XviD codec. But I am under the impression that the *NEW* DivX 6.1 will do it on it's own.

(and I normally don't do impressions) lol

thanks.

also, I have been reading about the use of AutoGK to do this. Well, the new version of DivX 6.1 is NOT compatible with AutoGK. You can edit the DivX.dll to get AutoGK open with this code:

goto %windows%/system32 and make a copy of DivX.dll
open DivX.dll in a hex editor
goto 0008ABCD address and change 00 to 07
save and replace the original.

but it won't work using the DivX codec.

I seem to recall reading some place that AC3 is not part of the DivX media format specs. Doesn't seem right though although it would explain why you don't get AC3 with DivX create.

Why not just use AutoGK with XviD?

I could.

Divx has been raving about the speed of the new codec v6.1 and if it is as fast as they say, I would prefer to use it, but so far in my personal test, I haven't seen the speed they say you get.

and I have a intel p4 3.2 HT with 2 gig pc3200 memory using raid with hd. And it doesn't seem any faster. Still takes a few hours to convert a movie. :(

Thanks for your reply. I am a novice when it comes to converting video. So I am just now getting into it because I am running out of space. But I have spent a lot of money on my intertainment system, and want to keep AC3.

Any suggestions on what is a balance on compression and keeping true AC3?

NOTE: with autogk and XviD, my AC3 lite on my stereo does not lite up and I cannot select SPDIF OUT on my computer when playing. With DVD I can. (using power DVD to play both).

Try a different player and say FFDShow to decode. It doesn't care where the AC3 comes from and can also encode other sources like 5.1 AAC to AC3 on the fly and output via SPDIF. Of course you can do the same thing via hardware if you have dolby live certified hardware as found on some nVidia based mother boards and the HDA Mistique sound card.

As I understand it the main performance increases come from dual core. With HT you only gain real benifits if the code is poorly written. Properly written and optimised code, HT makes no real difference since it is still really only one core.

XviD just got multi thread code anyway.

I selected to "Keep original sound track" so it wouldn't encode any audio, just the video. But when I play back, I am not getting AC3 according to my stereo and ears.

I am trying a program that I haven't seen much of on this site called "avi.NET". located at http://www.clonead.co.uk/ It is encoding now, and it is suppose to keep the AC3.

Not sure if I have my computer set up correctly either. If I play a DVD, ac3 works (thru SPDIF), but I can play the divx file I just made, (and according to divx) is suppose to keep the AC3 file, and it don't work. All I get is stereo. And reading on their site, it is something to with the settings on the AC3 filter installed. I don't know. I am getting frustrated with it.

learning a lot also thanks to this forum with all the guides and help manuals.

whewwwwwww. It worked.

avi.NET software keeps the AC3 and works with DivX 6.1

But, powerDVD won't play it in AC3. I had to use the latest version of Windows Media Player Classic (freeware) and the AC3 filter (freeware).

Thanks everyone for your help on this.

Now time to go encode some movies!!!!!!!
