Hey,
been jumping around the forums recently; and I saw somebody talkin' about the best components for building your own computer, and I thought right away--I should probably build my own too, because I've been thinking about getting a new one, but none I see are powerful enough.....I was wondering if there was a book or something to get me started on how to do this?

Hi Halen,
You need to first select a motherboard and CPU; everything else will follow. (These will of course require good memory and a top-quality power supply.)
I have good luck with ABit boards, such as this one:

And this would be a nice CPU, an Opteron DualCore 170 (very tasty):

I say go for it :^)
Check back here if we can help,
Regards
