How do I do with the sound when I need to split an avi?

It started with wanting to split an avi-movie. I had to decompress the sound and then compress it again according to Virtual Dub. So I used TMPGEnc and got a mp2-file with the sound. Then I was lost. What do I do? When I tried to split my avi the sound was ten seconds delayed. Tell me, what am I supposed to do to split my avi with working sound, without any delays?? I'm lost in this jungle...
