I have been burning DVD's for close to a year using a Philips 8421 DVD+R drive. I recently picked up a package of Memorex Double Layer DVD+R DL disks. I have only made one good disk out of 10 so far. I have used Memorex 4.7 GB disks in the past along with TKD and Fujifilm disk without any problems and very few bad disks. Any ideas why I the Memorex double layer disks will not work in my drive?

That's an older burner and I don't think there are any firmware updates available for it. Burning DL media usually requires very up to date firmware. I would get a new burner if you're interested in DL burning. I would suggest the BenQ 1640 or NEC 3550 or one of the new Liteons and be sure to update the original shipped firmware. The usual firmware sites don't list this burner at all. The HP support site has this fw update:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?product=433425&cc...

but it's not very recent (Oct. 2004) version 9H10.

+R DL disks need to be booktyped as DVD-ROM to ensure playback in most standalone players. I have no idea whether your drive is capable of this. Some of the Philips are rebadged Liteons and Benqs. If this is one of them you may be able to use their firmware.

You might try DLing DVD Identifier (see my sig below for the site) and see what it reports the burner to be.

Memorex +R DL media has been Ritek-made media in the past. I've used it without problems. Most would probably agree that Verbatim +R DL media is superior however.

Ok, DVD identifier tagged my drive as

Drive = PHILIPS DVD8421 [FW 6H01]

Am I to assume that this is what my drive actually is and that I do not have a rebadged drive?

It also says that my Memorex disks are Ritek.

Also, why do they label my drive as a double layer drive if, in fact it can not write double layer disks; however, it has produced one disk completely.

I did download the firmware update but when the program ran it said that it was not for my drive.

Firmware makes all the difference sometimes. When this burner was first manufactured there was little DL media around. It has only become readily available in the past 6 months or so. When the burner firmware doesn't recognize and have burn strategy for a media, bad things usually happen. Also better strategies are developed from time to time and implemented in firmware updates.

I have no idea why the firmware won't update. That's the only source for firmware for that drive I could find.

Quite honestly, Philips does a lousy job supporting its labeled products.

You'll probably save yourself a lot of grief by getting a new burner and upgrading its firmware. The new burners have been tested with most all the DL media that's about. It'll be worth the $40US investment.

I tried to update my firmware again and the second time it worked. The new firmware did the trick. I am able to burn my double layer disks flawlessly now. Thank you for all the information.
