I/O error generally means it doesn't like the disc.

Might be a bad press. Even though a disc works fine in a DVD player, it could still be a bad press.

Have you tried other DVD's, to see if they work, maybe the drive is not up to par? Are you up to date on firmware?

Good luck,

It could be structural copy protection on the disk you're trying to rip. Are you running AnyDVD in the background? Is it a commercial disk? If you don't have AnyDVD, you could try DVD Decrypter or DVDFab Decrypter. Both will overcome some structural and other protections.

I have anydvd running in the backround. I tried to backup mutiple dvd titles with shrink, recode, and decrypter.

The only problem i have is ripping not burning.

I have to use my slower and older dvd drive to backup and my 1640 to burn.

If you had an error log, that could really shed some light on the problem.

Is the 1640 new? Has it ever been able to read disks without generating this error message? Does it playback OK but just can't rip?

It is a new 1640 in a external usb enclosure. It work fine with everything but ripping.

Here is a log from DVD Decrypter. I guess it would ripp if i let it run for 7 hrs with DVD Decrypter but i still get a I/O error when i do my intial analysis.

I suppose there could be something hinky with the read laser especially since you say it burns fine. That would kind of rule out a bunch of things like bad usb cable, usb1 rather than usb2 port, bad enclosure, etc. Can you exchange it for another 1640?
