Most of the time my drives don't even recognize the dvd+r dl disc. If it does, it says that the disc is not empty. Both drives are capable of burning dvd+r dl discs. I'm using Memorex 2.4x dvd+r dl media on a Sony DRU-700A and LG GWA-4161B. I've tried burning the .iso with nero. I've tried burning pre-authored video files using nero. I've tried clonedvd2 and dvd decrypter as well. Nothing has worked. Can anyone help me?
This is what is says in dvd decrypter:

Hello nrk4594.
Two things:
1. Your burner firmware is not up to date. Updated firmware is at the link below. Download version VY08 and flash your drive.
http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1817
2. Most DL media needs to be booktyped as "DVD-ROM" for standalone players to recognize and playback. Only +R media can be booktyped which is what you're using. I think, but am not 100% sure since I've never had this burner, you can use the Lite-On booktype utility to set the booktype for your burner. Here's a link to the utility (note the utility won't work with an incompatible drive):
http://www.liteonit.com/ODD/English/e_downloads/e_utility.asp
I also will note that this was one of the first DL burners available and that newer burners are probably better at burning DL media. Also Sony disabled booktyping in some versions of the firmware for this burner. I assume it's implemented again in this latest version.
The best way to make a DL backup of a disk you own is to use DVD Decrypter as follows:
1. Set the Mode to ISO Read and rip an ISO file to your hard drive. An accompanying MDS file will automatically be generated as well.
2. Set the DVD Decrypter Mode to ISO Write, select the accompanying MDS file for the ripped ISO file, and burn.

Thanks for the response.
The link for the VY08 doesn't work. Does it matter that my Sony DRU-700A is external?
I was looking to get a new burner anyway. I had my eyes on this one. Would you recommend it?

Sure Plextor is good. I use BenQs and NECs and buy the oem versions, mainly because I don't think Plextor is any longer worth the price premium. For an external burner, I simply place the internal model in an external enclosure.
The BenQ 1640 and the NEC 3550 are both around $40US at online stores like Newegg. Add a Plumax or Bytecc external enclosure for another $25-$40US. Whatever you get be sure to immediately upgrade the firmware if a newer version is available. This is especially important for DL burning.
Here's another link to Sony firmware:

Usually it doesn't matter whether the burner is internal or external.
I think Newegg has that Plextor external burner for $130US after rebate:

Is it an executable? Usually doubleclicking the file will open up a little flash utility app that will flash the burner's EPROM.

When I run the flash, this pops up:
I have never upgraded firmware before and I don't want to screw up by drive.

Holy cow! I see what you mean. I don't read that language but I would imagine it's a warning about not doing anything else while the drive is being flashed, like turning it off. :) Seriously, all those characters are being displayed because you don't have that language set installed, although I don't know what language it is other than an oriental language of some sort. I'll try to find another source for you. Hang on a bit longer and I'll see what I can locate.

okay. I'm almost done bothering you. Just a few questions.
According to the instructions,
http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/downloads/700FWVY08/Firmware... you have to "disable DMA setting in Windows" for the DRU-700A. Does this need to be done if the burner is external? Even though DVD Decrypter says my burner is DRU-700A, Device Manager says it is DRX-700UL. So do I need to disable the DMA settings for my burner? If so, how do I do it?
It also says "uninstall any packet writing software, such as [DLA], [DirectCD], [B's CLiP] etc, from the PC." How do I know if any of the programs I have installed are packet writing software?
I swear, after this, I'm done asking questions. Thanks again for your help.

Unless you installed Sonic software or Nero InCD you probably don't have any packet writing software installed. Did you install any software that came with your drive? If so, what was it? You can always go to Settings -> Control Panel -> ASdd or Remove Programs and scroll the generated list to see if any of the Sony-mentioned programs are on it and if they are, uninstall them and restart.
External burners don't have DMA problems so you don't have to worry about that. Was this a 700a that you put in an external enclosure or is this a Sony supplied external 700UL. If it's the latter, use the firmware for that model. If it's the former, use the 700A firmware. I think it's at that site as well iirc. Firmware usually won't flash if it's for the wrong drive so there's a bit of protection usually built in.
