How do I make my dvd burner burn slower??

Im using a memorex double layer dvd recorder in my PC. The lowest speed it burns is 6x, which seeems to be working okay, but I just tried burning Star Wars BF2 and the audio skips a bit...anyone know of any good firmware sites or is this even an option? I may have to buy a new dvd drive...please help!

not sure how to tell specifics since i lost all paperwork, but properties says Memorex DVD16+/-DL4RWID2. Is it possible that a firmware "update" will make it burn slower?? I'll check out that site man, thanks!

OK thanks for help. I got 2 new versions of firmware i can install, and tried the first, and dvd decryptor still says 6x is the lowest. I can change it to 4x using dvd decryptor, but actual burn speed is 6x. I've tried Nero, Alcohol, all showing the lowest is 6x. Am I SOL? Is there a way to change a setting for the actual drive so it goes that low? im not sure what the firmware is doing but I'm installing the 2nd version now...

yep..same thing. doesnt seem like the firmware did much, at least not in the way of giving me more burn speed options. lowest using any app is 6x. Either there has to be a way to adjust this and allow 4x burn speed with settings for the drive or something, or i need to buy a different burner?

Put a blank DVD in that drive and open DVD Decrypter. When Decrypter recognizes the disc, it should pop up information on the right side. Paste that info here.

Don't quote me on this, but I want to say that the problem is with your discs. Do you have any other blank DVD's that you could put in to see what they say?

I think there is something wrong with your burner dude. I've been using the MCC004 (16X DVD+R Verbs), YUDEN000T02 and MAXELL002 for a a long and I can burn all of them at 4X flawlessly.
This is NEED FOR SPEED MOST WANTED, which I recently burned at 4X.
And here is a blank MCC004 (16X DVD+R Verbs) with DVD Decrypter checking the MID and speed.

I don't use DVD+R much for ps2 games, but I have in the past and the Sony DVD+R 4x work fine, but the Sony DVD+R 8x (YUDEN000-T02-00) only support 6x and 8x. I normally use DVD-R and never had any problems with burning at 4x.

Seriously and I mean it, no offense, but you're wrong about YUDEN000T02 only support 6X and 8X. I've been using genuine YUDEN000T02 for the longest and I can confirmed that it is, infact will/can support 4X, 6X and 8X burning period. I've successfully burned nearly a thousand of YUDEN000T02 at 4X and they all plays flawlessly, regardless if it's PS2 games or dvd movies.
If yours don't burn at 4X, then obviously there is something wrong with the burner.

what in the...so its possible the DISC im using is causing this? I'm almost positive I have tried 3 different brands, and they all say 6x is the lowest. I don't see how "something is wrong" with my burner, if it burns perfectly fine, all the time, its pretty new still, and ive upgraded the firmware...
anything else I can try? maybe physically removing the drive and reinstalling it? damnit!

Well, have you ever tried Nero Express? Give it a shot and see if you'll get any lower speeds with Nero. I don't know about you, but my DRU710A (BYX5) can burn 4X flawlessly when using 16X or 8X media on both DVD Decrypter and Nero Express. Here's a mini guide http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/2/275350 on how to burn using Nero Express.
On a side note here, I think your burner is a OEM of a Lite-On 1673S and it's current firmware is JSOD -- http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2026 - but I don't think you want to "cross-flash" the firmware from a Memorex to Lite-On though. It's pretty "risky" and can damage your burner. Worst case scenario, just burn them at 6X, if you've tried every possibilities and can't get it to 4X.

yeah ive always just used Nero express, and it looks just like your screenshots, only without the 4x as an option. I guess I'll have to get a different burner, but may just say F it...so far ive burned 10 ps2 games that all work perfectly...at 6x, except for the star wars battlefront 2. the game runs great, and movie scenes are fine, its just the narrator guy that skips alot..the one that talks during training and telling you your objectives...i can live with that. thanks for all the help.

OK, last question. There are so many, and I don't want to spend alot, so...what do you guys reccommend for me for a dvd burner for my PC? looking for the most economical, since i just need it to burn at 4x, i dont care if its dual layer or whatever since it will be a secondary drive just for ps2 games. just something basic. any advice on the brand with price would be great. thanks!

im just afraid if i go to the store, find a dvd burner, it will say on the box it burns up to 16x or whatever, then ill take it home and have same problem. it seems hard to find a burner that plainly states, burns at 1x, 2x, 4x, 6x, ...etc..yaknow? i mean by default, all burners SHOULD burn at as low as 1x right?

I think my brother just recently bought this one (or something very similar) and he can burn at 4X flawlessly. In addtion, when he used Nero Express and Nero Burning Rom or DVD Decrypter to burn, they all "book type" his DVD+R disc into "DVD-ROM" easily, just like my DRU710A does.
I would shop around to see what fits your needs first before buying it. However, the choice is yours.

Meaning, his (my brother's) LG burner can "book type" (changing the bitsettings) from a DVD+R media into DVD-ROM once it burned. Therefore, it will play on his PS2 console regardless of how old is the PS2. Yes.... DVD-ROM is the best, safest and or "universal" dvd format. Like I said many times before. All original PS2 games and DVD movies are pressed as DVD-ROM, therefore your PS2 console can play any "original" PS2 games flawlessly. The reason your PS2 can play any original dvd movies is because it was pressed as DVD-ROM format.
So to make a long story short... just get a high quality DVD+R media, burn them and "book typing" into DVD-ROM and you don't have to worry about your PS2 at all, never worry about it because I GUARANTEE you that it will play flawlessly. I've always been using YUDEN, Verbs and Maxell (DVD+R only) and "book typing" them into DVD-ROM format regardless if it's PS2 games or DVD movies, so far they all loads/plays beautifully.

Thanks for all your help man. I've never seen an option to "booktype" and all my burned ps2 games are working okay except this one..so im guessing Nero does it automatically. thanks for making this clear. Im going to try to burn the image on a friends new PC to see if he can burn at 4x. since im only having this problem on this one game. do you think the narrator's voice skipping could be fixed by burning just 2x slower? meaning, from 6x to 4x, you think this could be enough to make it skip>? thanks again man, you rock!
