hello, i'm just building my second custom pc and have now a challenge/problem that i can't solve by myself.
i am using hiren's 5.0 boot disc. it happens to be a problem when i try to install the operatin system. i have two new hard drives and when i try to install the operating system i get e message that goes
"partition not windows compatible"
using hiren's 5.0 partition magic i created a new partition
and still dosen't work.
any clues about what could be the root cause?
should i try umplugging both hard drives and connect only one at a time.
please help me with your expertise.

i suppose you could try unplugging and re-plugging...
this would be a time when a knoppix disc would come in useful, cause if it loads, then you know that all of your hardware is configured properly then you can use the software bundled with knoppix called QTparted, to manager you partitions and so on so forth...
hope this helps... try getting knoppix from either a friend or a linux magazine...

isn't hiren's a software capable of doing what you suggest with your other software?

sorry i have never heard of hirens before...
the message partition not compatible with windows is something strange to me, another option would be to hook it up externaly to a pre-existing windows installation and see what happens and whether you can format or anything <?>
NB: just a suggestion

do you think is wise to install everything again from the motherbnoard drivers and software?
do you personnaly have any installing steps by order that you have been successful with?

i dont really know, which is why what i have posted has only been minimal steps rather than something huge like what you are saying...
try posting a link to this thread in a pm to ddp or another knowledgeable member in this area...

not as far as i know unfortunately, ilke i said the only suggestion i can make is to use linux knoppix live cd (it has KDE which is good)
sorry couldn't be of much help...
like i said, try pm'ing ddp or another knowledgeable member

Have to agree with DDP. If you have your bootable XP disk, then use it. I think it is possible that your Hirens disk is not formatting your drive to either FAT 32 or NTFS. New HD's are not formatted as a rule. If they are not formatted, then XP will not recognize them. Plain & simple.
If you have a W2K disk, try using that and then upgrade from there. You still have to format the discs tho.

i thought that flanker27 would have already tried using a xp boot cd... thought that was a given...
anyway...
@ Buik it is not a good idea to upgrade from 2k to xp, better from 98 or something cause xp is based on 2k...

Actually, when you install any new OS, if should only be to a freshly formatted drive, not over any OS.

i totally agree with you grandpaBW but it also depends on what type of install is commited (upgrade or fresh install) i personally think upgrades are stupid and fresh installs should be done...
