Hey fellow afterdawn(ers),

I have been thinking about getting (updating) drives (dvd writer AND harddrive). As we all know - external is always more expensive and I am not real technical with taking apart my computer and like to avoid doing so if possible.

So ...

If anyone reading this has any experience and / or knowledge / thoughts / pros / cons ... general advice ... etc ... about buying Internal drives and using enclosures for them, I would really appreciate it.

I really need more - extra GB, and I am always looking to upgrade my burner.

I am a bit apprehensive about it, and just want to know if it is simple. I presume its just putting a few wires together between the drive and the enclosure - then simply hooking up the enclosure to a usb2 or firewire?

1) Am I correct in assuming this?

2) Does anyone doing this notice any problems using these enclosures?

3) Any discussion related to this is welcome - I just want to make a good decision about it

The BenQ and LG burners are very picky about the chipset of external enclosures!!! It's a good idea to try to find out what chipset a particular drive manufacturer uses for their retail enclosures and get an aftermarket one with the same chipset...

I use Bytecc (USB2) and Plumax (Prolific chipset, USB2/FW) enclosures with my NEC 3500 and NEC 3540 without any problems. Also used Bytecc for my NEC 2500 and Liteon 1633.

hi. i have two Belkin USB2.0 enclosures, can't remember the exact models but they are amazingly stable when used with burners. when i used them with various hard drives they were a bit hit n' miss but i only ever bought them for burners really.

as to using USB enclosures, just make sure the jumpers for each one is set to MASTER, they won't work on SLAVE or cable select.

This is what I am talking about!

Thank you for all of your replies and input. Being as though I am a virgin in this area of knowledge, I would not have known to look out for these types of things.

All this info will help me save time and prevent some frustration.

If I get a chance this week I will be going to the store to get a closer look at some of these and now I will know what to seek out and be able to ask intelligent questions directly related to my needs.

Thanx again guys, all of your input is greatly appreciated!

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
