i am interested in doing a little multitrack recording on my computer/laptop but i have very little knowledge of this method of recording. I would normally be at home behind a DAW unit but i want to set up something simple at home to record songwriting ideas etc.

i have a copy of adobe audition and tutorial dvd which i have yet to tinker with fully. I have also heard a lot of noise about calkwalk software.

basically im just after a little bit of input from those of you who already multitrack record on your pc so i know what extra it i may need, if audition is indeed any good, and any major pit falls etc of pc recording. ive been reading a bit about usb/firewire interfaces and dont see what else they do above my mixing desk other than the connectivity.

i have a 1.5ghz laptop, 1g ram, 50gig HD and also a 2.4ghz desktop 512 ram, 80 gig hd and soundblaster pro soundcard. musically wise i have a small mixing desk i can use with enough XLR and jack inputs for what i need to do, a condenser mic with phantom power unit, and my acoustic guitars.

any help is greatly appreciated thanks

Es

Pro Tools. For under $500 you can get a MBOX or the new MBOX 2 with Pro Tools 7. A very good deal for what pro tools can do. http://www.digidesign.com

For the best quality mp3s use EAC (exact audio copy) to rip your audio CDs and LAME to encode them. Follow this guide:

was hoping not to have to spend $500 or £500 to be fair. for that amount of money i can set myself up with a fairly decent DAW recording device.

thanks for your insight though

for a decent pro multi track editor, you're not going to find much under $500. Other pro apps like Reason, Cubase, and Logic are all around that price.

But considering what pro tools LE can do, $500 is a steal for a basic DAW.
