Installed amd 2800 barton fsb 333 but says its an unknown cpu running at 1666 mhz

I just got done installing an amd 2800 barton core with a fsb of 333, my computer is saying its an unknown cpu type and its only running at 1666 mhz, the fsb is at 166 mhz, dram at 200 mhz, what am I doing wrong, its only saying its a 1.66ghz and I know they go to 2.08ghz.

u did make sure ur mother board supported this cpu? 166 mhz should be right for a 333 bus speed. some mobos have switches that u have to set when u upgrade cpu and some are in the bios(cmos). also mke sure ur ram is rated at 333(ddr pc2700)

Motherboard - msi k7n2-v supports up to amd athlon xp 3400+ barton
Ram - 512mb crucial fsb 400 pn3200
Processor - amd 2800 barton fsb 333
I need to upgrade my bios version but don't know how

be very carefull updating mobo firmware, i learned the hard way(mucho denero). is this a custom pc or did u buy it from a retailer? every time i changed a cpu i had to change the mhz on the mobo. they usually have a set of switches or u have to use the bios to do it. i went from a athalon 2400 to a 3200. to start out with i used my old ram and my cpu was clocking at 1.6gb, after i got the new ram i set the mhz to 200 (pc3200) or 400 fsb it went to 2.23 gb. 333 fsb should be 166 mhz. mke sure u have this set right or your clock speed will be low. if u dont have the switches then u will have to go into bios(cmos) to set it.

I was going to update the version of the bios, its free. I don't have a floppy drive in my computer. Is there a way to update the bios without having a floppy? I read something about flashing the bios because I have an outdated version of award winning bios. Its a custom pc that I built. Even at 166 mhz fsb, 200mhz fsb on dram, why wouldn't it go up to 2083mhz, it stays on 1666mhz. What do you mean by switches on the mobo? Jumpers? Do you think an outdated version of the bios would cause this. It doesnt even detect what kind of cpu I have. The mobo says its compatible all the way up to 3400 amd athlon xp.

They have a burnable iso that will boot up. Just open the iso with ultraiso or winiso...insert ya flashing tool and rom or bin...then recompile the iso and burn. Instructions are on the site and it works great.:>

What settings should I have an my bios for my setup? For some reason even at 166mhz cpu fsb, it still says 1666 mhz, why?

166 x 12.5 is the right setup for that CPU, so not sure why it shows as 1666MHz. That indicates that it is running at 133.
Try using this http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/software/swr/spt_swr_list.p...
It updates MSI bioses within windows, just make sure you are NOT running other software at the same time.
I have used live updaters for bioses a few times by different manufacturers and have not had one issue yet.

you should make sure that the multiplier is being selected properly because you might only have it at x10 (166fsb x 10 = 1.66GHz) when it should be at x12.5

Version 3.73
That one should be fine for you. INstall and run and it will find your current bios version and update with newer one.
The multiplier could be in 1 of 2 places, dip-switches on your mainboard or in the bios. The latter is most likely on your board. Or it could be automatic.

I have never seen anything in the bios about the multiplier! I have read the mobo manual up and down and not seen anything on the multiplier in it! I am going to install and run the live update and get back to you on what happened.

it's not running at 10x cause barton cores have locked clock multipliers. i found that out when i overclocked mine from 2.08 to 2.21
athlon xp 2800+ 2.21ghz (177x12.5 at 1.8v)

Some of the early Barton cores were unlocked.
I say some, my 2500+ and my mates 3000+ were :) and some guys on overclocking forums had joy too.
I personally agree though and think it is FSB or simply bios update that needs sorting.

well i did notice that when i wiped my cmos (due to ahem...a speed error on my part) it reset the fsb to 133mhz. maybe he needs to re flash the bios or soemthing

I just performed the live update and it was succesful, I have the newest version of the bios. For some reason after I did that, now its running at 1250mhz and I have the fsb at 166mhz with the ram at 200mhz. It reset all my information in the bios and I changed the fsb to 166mhz and it didn't do anything.Helppppppppppppppppppp! What is goin on?

i have no idea what's going on now. i mean, the only thing i could possibly think of is try to completly reset everything to stock, or look into all your cpu settings in the bios to see if maybe you can adjust the clock multiplyer

If its showing as 1250 then it has dropped down to 100mhz FSB. It sounds like your settings have gone to defualt anyway.
Are they saving when you change them? If you put it to 166 then save and exit and go back, does it still show as 166?

Yes, they are saving. My multiplier is locked at 12.5 and yes the cpu fsb is at 100mhz. The problem is even if I clock the cpu fsb at 166mhz, it doesn't change anything, its stuck at 1250mhz.I can increase the cpu fsb to 200mhz and it still won't change anything. Its as if the motherboard isn't detecting that I am changing my fsb. But the bios is.

Has any one heard of a mobo locked at 100mhz fsb for the cpu but you can change the fsb for the cpu in bios but doesn't actually do anything?

Only when the settings havent been saved...ie F10, or the cmos battery is dead and not saving settings properly.

hmm it would be odd for teh cmos battery to die, but it would make sense. actually...if the cmos battery died, then it wouldn't keep time either
