I have swap magic 3.6 and I am trying to backup Grand Theft Auto III as a first step to learn how to backup. I have only DVD +R and +RW (TDK). I have an NEC DL burner and an LG burner.
Of course I am attracted to the +RW to avoid waste while I learn. I know great efforts have been taken to make the media question clear to newbies, but there are two things I still don't understand despite all my reading.
My PS2 (Slim) is reported capable of reading +R and I think +RW, and many PS2s can read +R. Yet nearly all the media discussion recommends -R disks. So is it a waste of time to try +R or +RW?

Secondly, Alcohol 120 lets me set the booktype to DVD-ROM. Is this necessary? (I don't succeed in getting DVD Decrypter to change the book type).

(So far I only burn discs that are reported by Swap Magic as not being valid PS2 discs and I am 80% sure that +RW is a hopeless cause).

Yep, not many people (if any) have luck getting dvd rw's to work on their ps2 whatever model...
by all means try the DVD+R and booktype it.. or go with the DVD-R whcih a lot of people prefer (me included). More important is the brand of media you choose, whichever type + or - you decide to go for. Check the best media thread in my sig for what is consdered by most people to be "the best"... it'll save you a lot of trouble to get good media. I would say that almost half the problems posted on this site can be solved by just using good media to begin with.. we see so many questions from people using crap media like memorex, imation and other cmc mag discs and asking why their backups won't work or they work but stutter or have sound problems etc...

good luck with your burns and happy new year!!!

Glad it worked out for you :)

I'm not sure how good samsung media is though, it might be ok for ages and then one day it won't work anymore.. what's the media code that you get from these discs?
I'm not trying to scare you or anything or get you to buy discs you don't need, I'm just trying to point out some problems you might have with poor quality media.
Check out the official best media thread in my sig for more info on disc types and what's best for your burner etc.

I am waiting for some TDK media to arrive, I just bought a Samsung disk in the local supermarket to see if DVD -R was the magic cure.
