I have a relatively easy question. I am in need of an upgrade on my processor. I recently bought a socket 939 mobo, and was very interested in AMD dual core processors. I was considering getting a FX-57, but in the end I thought that I would be better off getting dual core.
On to my question: should I get a +4400, or is there enough of a noticable difference to spring for the +4800. I have heard some bad things about the +4800 (about it crashing unless you download a dozen patches/fixes) and the like. I was wondering if I would be well enough off just getting the +4400. Also take into consideration that I don't have it in the budget right now to get anything but the fan/heatsink that they come with.
I will be using this computer pretty much just for gaming and a bit of photoshop here and there. Also, does anyone think that the FX would be worth it over the X2? Thanks for any help. All comments would be appreciated.

Instead of an Athlon x2 64, I would recommend an Opteron x2.
The difference is primarily L2 cache (the Opterons have 2 x 1MB = 2MB :^)
The Opteron Dual-Core 170 is sweet @ 2000MHz, and is almost exactly 1/2 the price of the Athlon x2 64 - 4800+ (with 2 x 512KB cache).
Note: there are no patches/fixes for these CPUs, just the requirement for a good motherboard, good cooling, good memory and a 500W+ powersupply.
If you have the S939 mobo, grab an Athlon64 3000+
They are like $150 bucks incl. taxes & everything...
FX-57 (in Canada) is $1200 bucks plus taxes, LoL

My mobo is an Asus A8V deluxe. I did not want to part from my x800 AGP, so this was the only socket 939 Asus I could get. I already have an Athlon 64 +3400. It just isnt handling everything like i want it to. I am running 1gig of ram, and memory isnt a problem.
I still would like to look for something in the Athlon x2 category. Thanks for the help, though!
Nice CPU - things don't really get a whole lot faster than that, y'know? I mean, the CPU is not really a bottleneck in your system...

Well A8V supports the new x2 CPUs, but I say keep your rig 'together' - what're you gonna do with the 3400+ if you buy a new CPU?
If you want Opteron x2 you need PCI-eXpress w/ something hot (7800GTX?) or SLI.
You're not gonna need an FX with that AGP mobo...
Sure (WTF) grab one but, you will still have your old CPU kicking around, no money, and you won't notice too much difference, honestly.
I would be happy with what you've got: hang in there another year - you will then see a new different AMD socket mobo, new CPUs and BTX mobos/cases etc...
