Hey,
I have the same burner HP LightScribe 640c (with the firmware upgrade). If your games aren't working, it isn't you or your routine. It's the media.
For the longest time I fought others on here stating that "media doesn't matter." I've burnt so many games on cheap branded blank dvds. Thus, I thought I had the "proof in the pudding."
Okay, I ran into three games thus far, that provided issues. They are Star Wars Battlefront II, Karaoke Revolution Party, and Ace Combat 4. Star Wars Battlefront II would stutter, and getting to the main menu was a serious issue. Karaoke Revolution Party would get to the loading animation, and just sit there. Ace Bombat 4 would just be a constant black screen.
I had burned the games on the Office Max brand dvds. Heck, $15 buck for 50 dvds, what a deal. Well, they are great for movie dvd burns, but now I know they are horrible for PS2 game duplications.
I reached over, grabbed one of my +R Lightscribe blank dvds, burned the Karaoke game onto it, and inserted it into my PS2. The game loaded instantaneously, and everything was fluent. Since the lightscribe discs are expensive, I went back to Office Max and purchased a bundle of HP +R dvds (speed isn't an issue since all games should be burned at 4x). I spent $38 for 50 blank dvds.
Back here at my desk, I inserted the bad copy of Star Wars Battlefront 2, created an image, and burned it back to one of the new HP dvds. Wa-la, the game loaded smoothly, and very quickly. Not that it's important with this topic, but the game passed the DNA online checker too. Once you have patched the IOP files of any game, burned it, you need not patch them again if you make copies from your copies.
Karaoke Revolution Party, as well, loaded successfully, smoothly, and well, what else can I say - media does matter. You get what you pay for in other words. For dvd movies, I'll still stick to the cheapest brands out there. But, for PS2 games, I'll stay with HP branded dvds. I can say that Maxwell blank dvds work too. I had a friend send me a few burned games that were on Maxwell dvds, and they worked smoothly as well.
Food for thought,
