Glad you got it figured out...I would be interested in the same question being answered as well. Smooshie, how about what you found?

First thing you can do before installing additional programs to do what you want, is to go to Start, Run, type in msconfig and uncheck all the unnecessary programs that are starting up with the system.
All you need really are:
vid drivers (but not their help programs)
sound (again, but not their help programs)
firewall
av program
theming software (if you use them)
other must have programs
Help programs, update programs, media players, instant messengers, AnyDVD, P2P, Adobe, MS Office...or any others like them don't need to be running at startup. All of those programs run just fine when you launch them normally.
Keep in mind, that most if not all, messenger clients need to be logged in, in order to uncheck their 'startup with windows' option.

Thanks Morph. I was able to disable some of the basic apps that were straight forward, but I wonder about all the other 'stuff' that I'm not familiar with.
Is there some sort of list somewhere that describes the functions of the different windows apps etc, and what all the names represent?
Basically, I don't want to shutdown something that is critical and going to casue problems.
Thanks.

Thanks for all the input on apps to try. I did try as Morph suggested through MSCONFIG, but ran into at least one issue. I was 'unchecking' some of the items that looked reasonably safe to do so. From that point on, I could not log on to my financial websites for banking etc. Any website that was set up for password admittance. Ex: Main bank page OK, but SIGN IN page 'not found' for all I deal with. They worked fine on other machines, and when I reverted back to 'normal' starup, they are working again. So, goes to show how uninformed I am about what's safe & ok to remove from startup.
Any thoughts?

i think i have figured it out.. i spent a good hour or so going over whats running and doing some research.. i managed to get my total page file usage down to 182 with everything i need. and opposed to 229... the rest of the programs i'm sure are critical processes... and networking..AV etc. ..so i think this is the quickest i can get my pc running... i've scanned with Anti virus, used add aware.. fixed 500+ problems with my pc using Pc onpoint... closed all useless processes.. defragmented my hard drive, checked the volume for errors.. and downloaded all new updates for everything... the only thing that i could do now is delete alot of usless files off my hard drive but i'll only do this if i'm sure that it will improve the overall performane to run a game... i know that for opening programs like 'M word' etc. it will open faster with only a small amount of disk space taken up... but i'm not sure if there will be an inprovment when running the game.. which by the way is installed to my hard drive.. not running from a disk. if you could give me some advise about this it would be great.. and also if i missed anything out which can increase performance that would be great too :D
