hard drive won't boot after restore

I was trying to restore a PC. It did the full install and then said to remove disc and hit any button for the PC to reboot. it showed the status bar at the bottom of the screen and when it hit the full bar it froze. i tried to restore again and it did the same thing. So I figured it might have something to do with the fact that the hard drive might not be NTFS. So, I took out the hard drive, reformatted it with another PC and put it back. I installed the OS, and again, it froze after reaching full bar. Any ideas or suggestions. Thanx in advance.

You are talking about 2 different things - a restore is not installing the OS from the OS CD.
Won't boot after 'restore' - I'm not sure what that is (what you're doing). More info, maybe I can help.

the Pc already had XP installed, but it was running on FAT32. I tried installing XP all over and that's when the problems started. maybe my terminology is off. at first i was installing XP over the existing one, after i removed the HD and formatted it with my other PC, I was attemoting to install XP again. Both ways had the same effect. I am not sure what the status bar is for. I believe it's the same bar that the PC shows when it is running a scan disk, but like I said I am not sure. The bar gets to 100% and frezzes there.

Pokey5, how the hell do you know as that is what this site is for to help people with computer problems! next time someone asks for help & you don't know the answer, don't reply with that stupid comment. when & if they bring the karma system online, you won't do to good.
{TKO}, take the ram out, use a pencil eraser on the gold contacts on the ram than reseat. power up & post results.

i tried the RAM thingy, it made a difference but not necessarily a good one. after i used the eraser on them, i tried to boot-up. it went automatically to the screen where you choose "safe mode", or "last known", or "start normally", etc... when i tried normally, it showed the same status bar and froze at 100%, WHILE the choices were still on the screen(which it hadn't done before). when i tried safe mode, it goes through the multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)-thing and it froze at windows/system32/drivers/mup.sys

try last known as did that last night on a customer's computer & showed me were part of the problem was. the other part is a bad board.

i did try it just for SaG. nada. BTW, wouldn't that NOT work since technically there is no "previous" configuration due to the fact that i reinstalled XP?
another update. i was googling around and i found a suggestion to try the restore cd to fix a corrupted or deleted file. so i try it, again just for SaG. i couldn't find any point where i could hit "r" for repair, so i did another install thinking that it is a longer version of "r"epair. it finished the install again, and siad to put the disk some place safe, and hit any button to reboot. so i did, again, and this time it went to a screen that said that file "pci.sys" was missing or corrupted. and i should put the restore disk back in and hit "r" to repair. obviously that didn't go to well previously, so in my infinite stupidity i figured, why not just remove the HD and put it in my other PC as a slave, and manually replace the pci.sys file from my working HD. that part went well. HOWEVER, when i replaced the problem HD, i tried booting-up and it goes passed the initial screen that shows the hardware, then it freezes on the black screen after that...
that's where i am at now...

can you try another cd or another rom drive as might be 1 of those 2 giving you the problem.

another CD is not an option unfortnately, but i am doing the other drive as i type this. i will have a status report within the hour.

ok. no go. i tried another drive. the PC wouldn't recognize one of the two drives so i opened it and switched the IDE cable. i then tried the install. it got to the screen saying that windows could not boot because pci.sys is missing or corrupted. it then recommends to install the restore cd and "repair". this seems to be my new problem, cause before it was just freezing, now it keeps giving me this screen.

look at the cd against the light to see if can see the light thru any scratches.

negative on the scratches, but you know what? i just remembered something. i was working on a buddies computer and i needed to install windows and i was going to temporarily use my restore disk to check it out. and it didn't take. at the time i assumed it was because the disk is for emachines and it wouldn't take on any other PC. i tried his XP disk and worked just fine. could that be the problem? is it possible that the disk will only work on emachines, or worse only MY emachines?

yes as it was made for that machine not other types. does computer case have serial # for your windows & if so borrow a friend's copy that is same version as what the serial # is for. it is legal as long as you have a legit #.

actually the problem PC was hand built. but i think i can get a copy from my university for dirt cheap. so i'm gonna try that.

Yes! LoL (and it seems it doesn't work too well on yours either ;^)
You need a real OS disk - not some restore BS.

However, learning things 'the hard way' is a time-honoured traditional method of acquiring knowledge...

You say you got started on this because you guys were FAT32 not NTFS?
You coulda just converted...

i'm working on that "real" XP disk as we speak. as for the converting, i learned that during my research for this problem. but like you said, learning the hard way is time honored. and i would hate to learn the easy way... lol. but i will get it right. you'll see. thanx for the info. everybody.
