You most likely have to RAID them together so the computer reads them as a whole. It is REALLY easy to RAID, all you pretty much need is a wire set.

Sounds like you need the drivers installed for it to recognise your SATA drive. You may need to get a floppy disc with the RAID drivers (should have come with MOBO software), you insert driver floppy into floppy drive (how many times do I have to say floppy!?). Then you will need to configure your RAID set up before you go any further.
You can then stick in your XP disc & install windows. It has been a year since I did it, so I am a little bit sketchy as to the sequence! Unless you have the drivers installed, your MOBO will not recognise the HD!

1. Are you installing this as just extra storage?
2. What is the model number of the motherboard and its approximate age?

>>secondary. i don't know how to use the bios. each hd has it's own cable.

double check the jumpers

>> check. all looks good.

2. What is the model number of the motherboard and its approximate age?

>>1. yes and no. i'm have severe issues with viruses, i can't get rid of them when i get them, so i always end up re-installing my os. it's the only thing that works. i just re-installed my os a week ago, and already i have grayware that housecall can't remove. microsoft beta and adaware don't even see it. so i'm going to install 2 more hd's, i'll have one for downloading, one for media, and one for my os. i'm hearing that the viruses will be contained on the one hd. can i have some opinions on this matter?

2. i do not know the model number, or it's age. i bought it from dell 3 months ago.

The Dell machines I have seen before don't have their BIOS settings set to auto detect IDE devices unless the devices were supplied by Dell.

You will have to change the BIOS settings if you have added extra hardware.
