Is ares safe in reference to viruses and threats? Is it one of the better p2ps available?

Yes, it is safe if you stick to music. As with ALL other p2ps, if you go for warez, porn, videos, youre just asking for trouble...

Limewire Pro is the best, but Ares is one of the better p2ps available.

i also use ares but mainly for music though just as dvdback23 said.

I heard Ares is infected with spyware/adware. I think BitComet is pretty good and clean.
