Whats a good laptop?

Looking to spend $1000 or less and it needs to be capable of playing Worlds of Warcraft. And would like some multimedia inputs because would like it to import and export music but thats not a priority.
Plus whats a good graphics card to look for and places to look for deals?

Wow. Where to start?
World of warcraft requires 512MB of RAM, and you ideally want a full-scale graphics accelerator.
For under $1000 in a laptop, this could be a challenge.
What you're really after is a specification along these lines:
512MB DDR RAM
Geforce Go5700 or Radeon mobility 9700 (ideal), or a little less maybe such as mobility radeon 9100
some sort of non-standard sound interface (for good audio inputs)
FOr prices and deals I'll let afterdawn's american users look up offers, since I'm UK based, but in literal translation, $1000 is a little less than £600 and big laptops are more than that.

Go to Dell's website and spec out what you feel you need in a laptop. Do this under retail and also small business. I think you will find that $1,000 won't cut it in a laptop configuration. A few more dollars might help though. Once you do that, you can shop the internet for other deals as well.

i dont think laptops are capable of playing games like world of warcraft. You would need those laptops that are $3000 like alienware. I would think that a game like world of warcraft is pretty demanding on the graphics card and laptops graphics cards just dont cut it.

You could do it for sub $2000 (not doom 3, but world of warcraft probably) but not $1000. Getting low-heat low-powered versions of cutting edge technology is expensive.

You can spec out a 9300 with a Geforce go6800 videocard for about $1599. after rebate its $1100. that should easily handle your needs.

I'd recommend a Sony. Between me, friends and family, we've gone through many many Sony VAIO laptops and they all work great. Second choice would be Dell or Toshiba.

I was wondering how you'd respond to that!
But actually I agree with you, personally i think windows is the lesser of two evils. There is one non-evil out there, Linux, but I'm not quite sure I'm ready to go linux yet. I might try out a version though and see what I think.

yeah I've fooled around with linux, and it is a great OS, and very stable, its just not quite at the point where its user friendly enough for people willing to switch from windows. that and there is a major lack of software available. but hopefully someday soon PCs will start shipping with linux...that might finally light a fire under gates' ass to make a better OS! lol

PCs do ship with linux. Trouble is it's only the really cheap ones because it's cheaper than windows to buy. Bit of a shallow reason, really.
