I want to backup my ps2 games but i dont want to get a modchip. I know i need a disk that acts like a modchip (swap magic) but im not sure what more do i need? Is it just swap magic? Thanks.

I got this from their site....

"Swap Magic 3 MUST be used with easy no-soldier mod-chip -OR- Slide Tool / Flip Top Cover."

What is a slide tool/flip top cover? and where can i get it?

OR

if i go with a modchip (im assuming u dont need swap magic), is there a channce that i can ruin my ps2 because of this and do i need to get it professionally installed?

There's always a chance that a modchip could do damage its just one of them risks you have to be willing to take if you want one but with the proper care there shouldn't be any problems as long as whomever is soldiering it knows what he/she is doing. A slide tool is this http://www.luis.de/shop/images/artikel/slidetool.jpg, it is used to open the disk tray so that you can swap Swap Magic for your backup, a flip-top is this http://www.success-hk.com/welcome/ps2-tools/ps2-flip-top-cover.jpg only thing with flip-tops are you have to open the Ps2 to replace the top half of the shell which voids your guarantee (slide-tools don't void anything)

So all in all a slide-tool & Swap Magic is all you need.

Just to add to what p4 said - in most cases if you have a slimline ps2 I think it's possible to replace that fliptop part of the cover without breaking the "warranty void if removed" sticker.. you just have to be careful when you raise the cover to install the new flip part.

Research what model ps2 you have before buying anything.. if you get the wrong case for your version there's little you can do but send it back and get a different one.

Yeah, don't buy it if you have a slimline, other than that once you have swap magic (and high quality media..!) you should be set to successfully backup your games and play them.

Good Luck!

You can check what version you have here http://www.mod-chip.com/ps2version.htm. You might check for it in the system settings (by pressing triangle when at the black browser screen) and you should see something like SCPH-xxxxx.
