I've followed the steps on how to backup PS2 games and still no success. Is there another method I should try. First of all
This is my DVD burner:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7372498&type=produc...

These are DVD-R disc I'm using:
http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=332...

I'm using DVD Decrypter for this process. I put the PS2 game in my DVD Rom. I open DVD Decrypter. For the source, I select the correct DVD drive where the game is in. I then select a destination on my HD for where I want the files stored. I go to mode, ISO, and then read. Once it reads the source, I click Decrypt. When that finishes I check to see if the files are saved correctly. There are two files, the ISO File and the MDS file. To burn the file onto the DVD I go to mode, ISO, and write. I select the file, the first time doing this I selected the ISO file. The second time around I selected the MDS file. I set the speed setting to 8x the first time and 4x the second time. I click write to start the burning process. Once that is done. I give my backup a try to see if it works.

I insert my swap magic 3.6 boot disc in my PS2. When the menu comes up I select the option for swap magic 3.6. This takes me to a screen showing Load Program and Video Mode: I take my slide tool to push the tray out, take out the boot disc and insert my backup PS2 Disc. I use the slidetool to lock the tray in place. I hit load program and it tells me not a valid PS2 disc. I hit special boot and still the same thing. Where I'm I screwing up, should I try another method or a different software. So far I've wasted 4 disc and there's no way I can use them again, not that I know of. By the way the games I've tried backing up are Metal Gear 3 and RE4. So can anybody help me or should I just give it up.

all you're doing is copyign the game from the original to a blank dvd? i tried DVD Decrypter found it too complicated, then i switched to Nero it was pretty easy all you have to do is go under the favorites icon, then hit copy dvd then insert the dvd it will read it then insert a blank and it will write it, good luck.

Do you actually have the swap magic disc, or that ultimate swap crap?

I've backed up both those games successfully and I have the same burner as you. Make sure your firmware is up to date. The current firmware release for the Sony DRU-810A is 1d. MGS 3 has a dummy file in the root directory of the game called DUMMY.DAT. You need to rebuild MGS 3 and overwrite the dummy file.

10. Q. What does rebuilding an iso mean?
A. It means that some games 4.36-4.38GB's may need rebuilt to work with Swap Magic. This isn't true for ALL games over 4.38GB's and differs on a game to game basis. There is no need to rebuild games if you have a modchip. Another purpose of rebuilding is to make games run smoother. Usually the size of the game after rebuilding is smaller, but not always. If you're a Swap Magic user, make sure to look out for dummy files when rebuilding.

11. Q. How Do I rebuild games?
A. With Nero and Isobuster (works as long as no single file is over 2 GB's): http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/197949
With CD/DVDGen: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/210515
With Expert (Gnie's new rebuilding tool):
Gnie's PS2 Auto Rebuilder Tool Download (Thanks to 3DLuis):
http://www.alucard.cc/ps2/ExPERT_v1.03.rar
Instructions to Gnie's Tool ExPERT:
From Anthony 05:
Download it and then follow these instrcutions and it will work.

1. select Shrinker_ps2_psp_CdDvd5_iso.epi on the plugins list.
2. Select the iso.
3. Click extract LBA
4. Click extract file
5. Click rebuild file
6. Click rebuild lba.

Make sure you do it in that order.

This worked for me when every other way failed.
It is very easy to do so even the noobies should be able to do it.
Keep in mind im backing up the PAL version, but if your having trouble backing up with NTSC then i dont see a problem trying.
Good luck.

92. Q. What is firmware and why should I care?
A. Firmware as defined by AD:
Sort of a "operating system of the hardware", an embedded instruction set built-in or flashed into a hardware equipment, such as a router, CDR drive, DVD-ROM drive, washing machine, etc.
Newer Firmware can unlock new features that are sealed on certain DVD Burners like booktyping, or simply enhance your existing Burner by improving burn quality and media compatiblility. Keeping your Firmware up to date is essential to ensure quality burns and maximum functionality from your DVD Burner. When flashing your burner with new Firmware, be very careful. Make sure you shut down all programs running in the background, the DVD-ROM drive is empty, and you follow all the directions included in the Firmware download exactly. A bad flash can fry your DVD Burner. Proceed with caution. You can find all the Firmware you'll ever need here: http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_all.php

i hope you haven't thrown those disks away. at the swap screen instead of pressing x, try pressing square [] for special boot. i do hope it works.

i once made tekken 5 and i got the same error, when i pressed square it booted up and played flawlessly.

and i am sure that MGS 3 needs rebuilding.

Sulaim, he already tried special boot... and metal gear solid 3 doesn't need to be rebuilt... I've burned that game like 4 times and every copy is perfect.

I think sly got it here - it doesn't sound like swap magic when he describes the boot up process. On regular swap magic there's no choice that you have to make before the swap magic load screen.

@Jtorr - what is the name of the boot discs you are using? and are they originals?
Keep hold of those discs you burned as there may be nothing wrong with them...

I'll take your word for it Paddy, but my NTSC version definitely has a dummy file in the root directory. But if you say you've burned it 4 times and it works with the dummy file intact, that's good enough for me. Cheers!

I have the PAL version though Tokijin... so might be different, the OP didn't say which version his was.

Yes, sorry about the confusion... mine doesn't have a dummy file in it.

Hmm that doesn't match mine at all. Come think of it aren't there a couple different versions of MGS3? Yeah that's it, there's two different versions, Subsistence and Snake Eater: http://www.gamespot.com/search.html?type=11&stype=all&qs=Metal+Ge... Even though Subsistence isn't out yet. Maybe the NTSC and PAL versions are just very different file wise. Not that important really. It's more important that he knows whether he has the PAL or the NTSC version.

No worries Sulaim, as you can see.. we all make mistakes, LOL.

Mine's the snake eater version Tokijin - Had it from day one when it came out here, burnt a copy within 10 mins of having the game home and have the original tucked away safely :)

It won't hurt to rebuild it anyway, even if it doesn't need it... GUN doesn't need rebuilding, but I did it anyway to try out the gnies expert rebuilding tool... and the iso came out at 1.67Gbs after rebuild.. whereas it was 2.81 before... not a big deal, but saves me some room on my HDD.. and it plays perfectly all the way through.
It won't work with some games though, tried that on a few others and they came out almost the same so not worth it for 20mbs difference.
[edit] unless it's very close to the 4.36gb limit of course, might make a difference?

I wish he would reply and tell us what he has exactly. This ultimate swap disc is going to cause all kinds of trouble. I believe its on cd, so you have to do a toc refresh to get dvd backups to load, which is going to spawn millions of new threads.

Yeah, it'd be nice to get a reply to the help we're trying to give him... usually you get people post back within around 20 mins or so saying "why won't someone help me" or "anyone there" etc.. this time we have the opposite, LOL.
I don't suppose you have a link or anything about this ultimate swap thing do you sly? I'm interested in what the makers etc have to say about it.

[edit] never mind... I've found this http://www.ultimateswap.com/

It might just be the disks your using, either your ps2 doesnt like em or your writer doesnt. On my ps2, I could only get TDK disks work on my ps2 when ive used my writer to burn em. Give a few brands a try, might do the trick.

You just need to read the directions. Yeah, the disc sucks because swap magic comes with a cd AND dvd. You only have a cd, so you have to load swap magic, hit eject and put in a big original ps2 dvd game to refresh the toc, then use your slide card to put in your burnt dvd game.

I give it another shot tommorrow. What would be an easy game to burn that would gurantee to work using the DVD decryter method and doing no special requirements. I would like to backup RE4 and Shadow of the Colossus, would those games take extra work.

One more thing can somebody explain the video mode and the special boot options. What's the purpose of these options. How would I know to use these options. Do I use Normal, PAL, NTCS, or special boot?

GTA San Andreas, Ace Combat 5, and Simpsons Hit and Run backed up with no rebuilding or modifying whatsoever. Only 3 games I've tried so far.

The video modes are so you can play a PAL game on NTSC PS2 or vice versa in color with the screen centered. It isn't perfect, some games will still be in black and white. The special boot is way around the normal method of booting, useful with problem games. Swap Magic is worth a buy, I'd never heard of this ultimate swap crap, but if Sly says it's garbage, it is. Get Swap Magic and you'll be fine.
